Taylor Swift Breaks Spotify Record With ‘1989 (Taylor’s Version)’

Taylor Swift broke her own record with the release of “1989 (Taylor’s Version),” which on Friday (10/27) became the most streamed album in a single day in the platform’s history. “She did it Again”, she posted on the platform, recalling that, in 2022, Taylor had already set the record for the most listened to album in a single day with “Midnights”.

Released on Friday itself, “1989 (Taylor’s Version)” is part of the singer’s ongoing effort to regain control of her music catalog by recreating her previous works – the original tapes of which were purchased against her will by Scooter Braun, the manager of Justin Bieber.

The original version of “1989” was released in 2014 and includes hits like “Shake It Off,” “Blank Space,” and “Style.” The album, which marked Taylor’s definitive transition to pop music, won Album of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album at the 2016 Grammys.

“1989 (Taylor’s Version)” is Taylor’s fourth re-release, following “Fearless (Taylor’s Version)”, “Red (Taylor’s Version)” and “Speak Now (Taylor’s Version)”. The re-recorded album includes all 13 tracks from the original and five new ones, most notably “Is It Over Now?” and “Now that we’re not talking.”

More records broken

Earlier this week, the singer also broke a record with “Cruel Summer,” a song from her 2019 album “Lover,” which reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100. With “Cruel Summer” reaching the #1, Taylor became the first female artist to have ten #1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 and ten #1 albums on the Billboard 200.

The song became a late hit due to the singer’s current tour, “The Eras Tour”, which begins with songs from “Lover” and where “Cruel Summer” is the second song presented. The recording began to be rediscovered on streaming, and as a result, Republic Records released it as the fifth single from “Lover”, outside of the album’s promotional period. During one of the following shows, Taylor said that he intended to release “Cruel Summer” as a single in 2020 during the promotional cycle for “Lover”, but abandoned the plan in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic and focused his artistic direction on his next album, “Folklore”.

In thanking fans for the unexpected success of “Cruel Summer,” Taylor shared a video on social media with co-songwriter Jack Antanoff, expressing gratitude for the fans’ continued support. “We just wanted to say thank you so much for making ‘Cruel Summer’ a Hot 100 No. 1 and it’s not even summer anymore. It’s mid-fall, I’m wearing a sweater. We love you,” she said.

She also recently broke the record for the highest-grossing documentary with her tour film, “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour,” which grossed more than $200 million worldwide.
