‘Penha Rap’ celebrates Black Consciousness with groups from the hip-hop scene

Five decades have passed since then DJ Kool Herc threw a party in the Bronx, a New York (USA), which changed the course of black music. The foundations were laid for the genre that conquered the planet, changing behaviors and society itself.

In Brazil the hip hop had its genesis in St. Paulmore precisely in the events of Via 24 de Maio and São Bento metro, iconic places in the center of São Paulo. From these meetings and activities, big names in national rap emerged, such as Thaide, DJ Hum, Racionais AND Rappin Hood.

To celebrate this important date, Penha Cultural Center presents the Penha Rap 2023 with the greatest representatives of the genre in Brazil. Watch:

Social asphyxia

The San Paolo band Social asphyxia became known on the national independent scene for the original mix of rock, rap, ska and elements that bring all the essence of street culture and a vibrant sound. The quartet formed by the MC and the trumpeter Kanedathe guitarist Tikothe bass player Leonardo and the drummer Beard has a history of two studio albums, two live DVDs and hundreds of performances at major festivals around the world Brazil, France, Holland, Germany, England, Scotland AND Portugal.

The debut album, From street to street (2012), brings participation from BNegão, Victória Binx, Marcos Agroóxi, Ariane Koziner, Gaspar, DJ Tano and Funk Buia (Z’África Brasil). Sistema de Soma (2020) brings the participation of Mao Jr. (Rotten boys), Karen Santana, Bocato, Gabriel Rosati AND Jonatas Petroleo. Together with the national rap poet GOG, the band released The face of the enemy (2018) e Social killersa 1993 song re-released in 2021.

In 2023, next to the rap singer From Rio MV Bill, the group broke free Shot in the darkstrengthening its connections with the Rio de Janeiro during the production of the third studio album, with production of Pedro Garcia (Planet Hemp), coming out later this year.

Recently, the Social asphyxia it was the attraction of Paranapiacaba Winter Festival 2023, Rock Rio Pardo Festival 2023, Haltpop Festival 2022 (Holland), Festival Chauffer dans la Noirceur 2022 (France), Punx Picnic Festival 2022 AND Rebellion Festival 2022 (England).

It will be a one hour presentation where we will talk about DJ culture, the Vinyl Nowadays, the scenes that revolve around this fascinating medium that resists time and technological advances, make the DJ cross styles such as Samba Rock, Soul, Original Funk, Disco, MPBamong these, we will reproduce artists such as Tim Maia, Jorge Ben, Roberto Carlos, Sandra Sá, Cláudio Zoli, internationals like them James Brown, Ray Charles, Michael Jackson, Tupac – artists coming from a past that remains current, as long as the work is recorded on vinyl, of which it is the trademark Vinyl forever.

Rosa MC

Rosa MC has been a rapper since 1992. Graduated art teacher FEBASP and Pedagogue for Uninovinsert the Hip hop in the field of education since 1988. Participated in the first women’s collection, Alternava Society – They for them, released by the record label Kaskatas Recordsin 1994.

In 2022 he released his first solo album, Powerful blackwith the musical production of Elly Pretoriginal (DMN) e DJ Hélio Branco and in September 2023 he releases his second album: ROSE MC 60 – Pioneer, unique and sixty years old.

By participating in conferences, debates, shows and live performances, the artist experiences hip hop in his veins 40 years be a trailblazer among women in rap. The rapper has opened doors for many women, being an inspiration to those fighting for equality, overcoming barriers and fighting prejudice and oppression.
