Box office | “The Marvels” marks Marvel’s worst debut in the United States

“The Marvels” was far from a one-hit wonder at the U.S. and Canadian box office. Premiering this weekend, the film that reunited three heroines from the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) grossed just $47 million. This is the worst domestic opening ever for a Marvel Studios production, in stark contrast to the resounding success the studio enjoyed up until last year.

While the MCU’s golden age produced more than $100 million in openings in the United States, “The Marvels” needed the entire international market to hit the mark, adding another $63.3 million from 51 territories. In total, the $200 million budget film grossed $110.3 million globally in its first few days of release.

Before “The Marvels,” the MCU’s worst domestic opening was “The Incredible Hulk” ($55.4 million) in 2008, followed by “Ant-Man” ($57.2 million) in 2015. with a negative record among the 33 MCU films.

The US actors’ strike played a significant role in limiting the film’s promotion, preventing the cast, including Brie Larson, from actively participating in promotion. But the criticisms were of no avail. The film divided opinion and achieved only 62% approval on Rotten Tomatoes, thanks to positive reviews from geek bloggers. Among so-called top critics (mainstream press), the score did not exceed 43%. To top it off, the public also equated the production with the worst titles in the MCU by giving it a B on CinemaScore (a survey carried out upon release in US cinemas), the same obtained by “The Eternals” and “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania ”.

Now the studio must review its approach to avoid greater disasters. On Friday (11/10), the day of the film’s premiere in the USA, Disney had already announced the postponement of several Marvel productions, leaving only one studio release for next year: “Deadpool 3”.

Among other films released in theaters, the video game adaptation “Five Nights at Freddy’s” has maintained a strong presence at the box office. In its third weekend, the horror grossed $9 million from 3,624 theaters, bringing its domestic total to $127.2 million and its global total to $251.9 million.

In 3rd place, “Taylor Swift: Eras Tour” continued to attract the singer’s fans. The documentary grossed approximately $6 million from 2,848 locations, raising nearly $173 million in the United States alone and $240.9 million worldwide.

Sofia Coppola’s biopic “Priscilla” reached No. 4 as its circuit expanded, grossing $4.8 million in 2,361 theaters. Its domestic total is $12.7 million. Unreleased in Brazil, the film that won the best actress award for Cailee Spaeny at the Venice Film Festival will arrive here only on January 4th.

The Top 5 is rounded out by Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon,” which grossed another $4.7 million from 3,357 theaters, for a total of $60 million in North America and $137.1 million dollars in the world.
