Singer Ebony released a powerful song this Wednesday (11/15), on her YouTube channel: “Hope You Understand.” The recording follows the tradition of the “diss”, the famous “badmouthing” of rap battles, which since “Roxanne’s Revenge” (1984) has been part of the “50 years of hip hop”.
In the track, Ebony openly debunks Brazilian rappers, mentioning by name BK’, Baco Exu do Blues, Filipe Ret, L7NNON, Orochi, Djonga and Kyan, among others, lamenting the lack of support for women in the scene. “I hope you understand, life / I love the songs, but I gotta prove my point / I got the face, I got the body and I got the rhyme / If I had a dick, the bofes would suck it,” the chorus says.
As soon as it was released, in the early hours of the morning, the diss ended up among the most talked about topics on X (formerly Twitter), and was initially heavily criticized. But opinions soon changed, as the track gained huge repercussions, even among the aforementioned rappers.
Repercussion
One of the first to comment was Baco Exu from the Blues. In the song, Ebony mentions the collaboration the rapper made with Luísa Sonza. The lyrics go: “I heard Maco said I’m overrated ’cause I’m from the southeast / But he put me in the best so I could see the routine / At first I thought it was cool / Then he went and did a feat with Luiza Sonza / P* Please go ahead and support your bank / I’m not even your girlfriend and you left me for the white man.”
Bacchus liked the jab. “I hope after today all these people continue to consume Ebony and other girls’ work. It was beautiful, it reminded me of 2016,” she wrote on X (formerly Twitter), but later deleted it.
L7nnon, who Ebony said she hadn’t decided whether she was black or white, posted a video on Instagram and also praised her, talking about the friendship she has with Ebony and that the rapper deserves to have more visibility.
“I’ve known Ebony for a long time, right at the beginning of my career. Every time we see each other, we talk a lot about that time… maybe you thought you would get stressed or react. We’re not here to respond, we’re here to give back the looks at girls, at people who lack opportunities… Black is a girl I’m a fan of, black, from the bottom, studied… a person who really understands the situation,” the rapper said.
Filipe Ret was another fan, highlighting the importance of every artist following their own truth.
“Oh, Ebony crushed it, she made a splash! Straight talk… that’s the trick, she makes her own sound, she makes her own truth… who am I to tell you anything, to advise you on anything… but kudos , it caused a sensation, it caused a sensation,” he applauded.
Major RD joked about the text’s commentary, which says he “does feats only with those he eats.” “If Ebony knew I haven’t even caught a cold lately… Days of Fight,” the rapper joked.
