Success of the 80s, the duo Hall & Oates separate with a lawsuit and restraining order

The duo Hall & Oates, authors of numerous musical hits of the 80s, are fighting a legal battle in the US courts. The situation reportedly got so out of hand that Daryl Hall obtained a restraining order against his former partner, John Oates.

Hall filed an undisclosed complaint against Oates on Nov. 16 in Nashville court, along with a request for a temporary restraining order. The next day, the court officially issued the temporary restraining order. However, as the trial is taking place under judicial secrecy, the reason for the request was not revealed.

There are no details on what motivated the trial, although this type of action always involves money. There is suspicion of a split of royalties or of Oates singing the duo’s songs in solo shows. They performed together until recently – they toured in 2017 with another duo, Tears For Fears – but all future dates on their schedules are now for solo shows.

Recently, Hall criticized Oates on Bill Maher’s “Club Random” podcast, referring to him as his “business partner” and not his creative partner.

Formed in 1970 in Philadelphia, the duo is one of the most successful American pop duo of the 80s. Their best-known songs are “Rich Girl” (1977), “Kiss on My list”, “Private Eyes” and “I Can’ t Go for That (No Can Do)” (all 1981), “Maneater” (1982) and “Out of Touch” (1984).
