Tropicalismo guitarist Lanny Gordin has died at the age of 72


The musician who played with Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Gal Costa and Rita Lee was hospitalized in a hospital in Sao Paulo

The musician Lanny Gordin is dead in the early hours of this Tuesday 28th, in Sao Paulo, on the day he turned 72. To the EstadaoBob Gordin, the guitarist’s brother, said that he he had been hospitalized for approximately 40 days to treat health problems.

Gordin, whose given name was Alexander Gordin, was born in Shanghai, China. He was the son of a Russian and a Polish woman. He arrived in Brazil at the age of six, coming from Israel, together with his family.

An excellent guitarist, Gordin began working early in the artistic scene of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. At the end of the 1960s he was part of the Brazilian group Octopus, alongside names such as the pianist Cido Bianchi, the guitarist Olmir Stocker, the double bass player Nilson da Matta and the multi-instrumentalist Hermeto Pascoal.

Gordin attracted the attention of maestro Rogério Duprat, who called him to play and create arrangements for fundamental records of Tropicalismo, such as Tropicália or Panis et Circencisnext to names like Gal Costa, Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Nara Leão and Rita Lee.

With Gal, the musician recorded the guitars for the album Gal (1969) and participated in the arrangements for Cold (1970). He also played in historical shows Gal – Fatal, 1971, then replaced by Pepeu Gomes.

Gordin was also important in the careers of Caetano and Gil. With the first he recorded Caetano’s white album, from 1969, which contains songs such as Behind the electric trio AND The Empty BoaT. He played guitar on Gil Expresso’s album 2222.

The musician also participated in the historic meeting of Gal, Caetano and João Gilberto, in 1971, on TV Tupi. He accompanied the singer on guitar. The recording of the special still remains unreleased, vetoed by João at the time.

Gordin also played together with other names in Brazilian music, such as Jards Macalé, Erasmo Carlos, Tim Maia, Wanderlea, Arnaldo Antunes and Chico César. In a solo career, he has released albums such as Project Alpha, volume I AND Project Alpha, Volume II (2004) e Duets (2006).

Throughout his career, Gordin faced schizophrenia, an illness that forced him to spend periods away from artistic pursuits.

On the night of Monday 27th, during the presentation of the show Fuck you in Sao Paulo, the musician and composer Jards Macalé, unaware of Gordin’s death, paid tribute to the guitarist, saying that he and Jimi Hendrix shared the same birthday.
