According to information released at the time by Rio’s Civil Police, reproduced by the newspaper Extra, the brothers, originally from Sao Paulo, worked in the kitchen of an Iranian inn in exchange for accommodation. Days before the crime they had been arrested for drug dealing in the inn. At the time they were considered fugitives.

In 2018, Thaylan Padilha Palomanes was extradited by Portuguese justice to Brazil following the case opened for the murder of the Iranian man. The two, however, were considered innocent at the end of the judicial process, according to a PF source.

MONITORING

The two had been monitored by the PF for years, according to the corporation source, who said both had gone through a process of radicalisation, using social media to spread their ideas.

The PF monitored the movements of the two brothers on European soil. Thauann’s last migratory movement occurred from Brazil on October 22 last year, on a flight from Guarulhos to the city of Porto, Portugal.

Thauann reportedly lived for a time in the Netherlands before joining his brother Thaylan in Estepona, a coastal city of around 70,000 inhabitants in Málaga, according to information the PF and Guardia Civil shared with Brazilian police authorities.

Spain’s Interior Ministry said in a statement on the arrest of the brothers, who were not named by the agency, that the two “were allegedly immersed in a process of radicalization and used encrypted instant messaging platforms to show their support active in the terrorist organization Daesh”, the Arabic name for the Islamic State.

“Both consumed and disseminated multimedia Daesh propaganda material through their online profiles. This material included terrorist activities carried out in various locations, manuals for preparing explosives and poisoning, cybersecurity, hacking, as well as documents justifying Daesh violence ‘execution of suicidal actions”, specifies the statement.

The FBI also collaborated with the Civil Guard and the Federal Police, “to locate, identify and neutralize the two brothers of Brazilian origin living in Spain”.

Another person involved in investigating the case, Europol, a European police agency, found “important international links with individuals detained or under investigation in European countries for their links to the jihadist threat.”

The arrest of the two brothers comes a few days after the federal police, in collaboration with the Israeli spy agency Mossad, dismantled an alleged Hezbollah cell that was trying to establish itself in the country.
