Sabrina Carpenter clip causes priest to fall from grace

Sabrina Carpenter, who recently traveled to Brazil to open for Taylor Swift, has disgraced a priest in the United States. Monsignor Jamie J. Gigantiello was relieved of his administrative duties at the parish of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Williamsburg, New York, and as vicar for development for the diocese after allowing the singer to record the music video for “Feather” within a 160 year old church.

The Catholic church was an important setting for the singer’s video. Released on Halloween, October 31, the clip features gruesome deaths and shows Sabrina celebrating the end of her detractors by dancing in church, wearing a black veil, next to colorful coffins with offensive inscriptions. The spread of the video prompted believers to order a mass to restore the “sanctity” of the place.

The day after the release, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn, which oversees Catholic churches in the area, released a statement saying that proper procedures had not been followed to allow the recording. According to the Catholic News Agency, Brooklyn Bishop Robert Brennan was “horrified” that a church was used to release a music video with that tone.

“The parish did not follow diocesan policy regarding filming on Church property, which requires a review of scenes and script,” the diocese said.

Following a review of events, the administrative duties of the church’s priest, Monsignor Jamie Gigantiello, have been removed and his position as vicar for development for the Diocese of Brooklyn has ended. He had been in office for 15 years and had been responsible for the parish for seven.

In a post on Facebook, Gigantiello asked for forgiveness from the ecclesial community. According to Mosignore, a film crew approached the parish in September and he authorized the filming, having found nothing inappropriate in the search for participants.

“In an effort to further strengthen the bonds between the young creative artists who make up much of this community and the parish, I consented to the filming after a general search among the artists involved revealed nothing objectionable. Parish staff and I did not We did not know that something provocative was happening in the church, nor did we know that fake coffins and other funerary objects would be placed in the sanctuary,” explained Gigantiello.
