Marina Sena explains the creative process behind the aesthetic signature of her career

Singer spoke about the partnership with Vito Soares, creative director who has worked with her since the first video

Since starting his solo career, Marina Sena has been a breath of fresh air for Brazilian music. Whether through her characteristic voice, striking lyrics or undeniable stage presence, the muse from Taiobeiras, Minas Gerais, has left her own mark on music lovers.

One of the biggest proofs of this is the singer’s always very well-crafted aesthetic. Since the video for “Touch me”, one of her first solo singles, we can see that there is an intention to hypnotize us, not only through her voice, but through her image — and she has succeeded.

After presenting himself on the second day of Primavera Sound 2023, Marina welcomed journalists for a quick round of questions, where we were able to talk a little about the construction of this visual identity. The artist explained that when she makes music, she imagines a scene, a vibe or a place and makes a song for that situation.

I’m on a beach at night, doing this, this and this, with these people, etc. This situation makes me create a song. It’s like I was actually making a soundtrack for a movie scene. So the aesthetic is completely linked to my music.

The singer then usually takes her idea to the creative team, led by Vito Soares — who made the first music video Marinaeven at the time of The Other Band of the Moon. “We left him as creative director to ensure that everything has the same look,” explained the singer.

The partnership is proving to be increasingly successful and Marina says they both think alike. “What I want aesthetically is the same thing he wants, we communicate completely,” he adds. The idea for the video filmed on the festival stage during the performance of “Dano Sarrada” was the director’s, and the person who went on stage to film the singer was the director himself. Vito, “This boy does everything!” The artist joked.

“It’s a friendly process. You know when you’re with your friends, drinking and you start: ‘Let’s do I don’t know what’, ‘Let’s do this then’, that’s how we are. It’s kind of a serious joke,” he concludes.
