Pianist Gilberto Tinetti dies at 90


Member of the Trio Brasileiro, he was professor at the Music Department of the ECA-USP

Gilberto Tinetti, a retired pianist and professor at the USP’s School of Communication and Arts, died this Saturday, 18, at the age of 90. Specialist in Alfred Cortot (1877 – 1962), he received the Carlos Gomes Award in 1999 as a pianist of the Trio Brasileiro – considered one of the best chamber music groups in the country. The death was confirmed by the professor of the Music Department of the School of Communications and Arts (ECA) of the USP, Eduardo Monteiro, a pupil of Tinetti.

Founded in 1975, the trio was formed by Erich Lehninger, on violin, Watson Clis, on cello, and Tinetti on piano, the Trio Brasileiro has performed in several countries in Europe, South America and the United States.

A law graduate from the Faculdade do Largo de São Francisco, Tinetti abandoned his legal career to study music. He was a pupil of personalities of classical music, such as the German pianist Hans Bruch (1891-1968) and, in Europe, in Paris, of the Franco-Brazilian pianist Magdalena Tagliaferro (1893-1986).

During his stay on European soil, Tinetti was the winner of the Mozarteum International Summer Competition in Salzburg for his interpretation of the Concerto no. 1 for piano by Johannes Brahms (1833 – 1897). In Paris, in 1970, he played the Villa-Lobos Concerto No. 4 for piano and orchestra with the French Radio and Television Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by none other than Jean Fournet (1913 – 2018).

Since 1980 he has been a professor in the Department of Music at the USP School of Communications and Arts, where he retired in 2002. Tinetti recorded 6 albums for the Philips and Eldorado labels, presented music programs on the Culture FM radio on the piano, such as Pianissimo. In 2021, friends denounced the pianist’s companion for an alleged case of abuse, according to reports from the complainants, the teacher also suffered from Alzheimer’s.
