Ask most TV fans to pick the best TV series of all time and you’ll likely hear the same titles mentioned over and over again. Some would choose the fall of Walter White (Bryan Cranston) that it is documented in breaking Bad . Others might choose Tony Soprano’s tragedy, especially since then the soprano end leads to such a juicy debate. As good as these shows are, I love David Simon’s. Wire, which delved into the corruption that raged in Baltimore, from the city’s ports to its neighborhoods and school systems. And we recently learned that a member of WireThe cast of wanted to continue the story through a movie, until it was turned down.
Wire celebrates its 20th anniversary this year and as such is available for purchase on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital and streaming on HBO Max (so upgrade your HBO subscriptions Max and start watching now). In honor of this milestone, Gossipify interviewed Simon, producer Nina Noble and key members of the ensemble. It was during this conversation that Wendell Pierce shared his idea for a prequel film Wireexplaining:
In fact, I convinced David (Simon) to make a movie. To do the prequel to The Wire, as Stringer (Bell) and Barksdale teamed up and took over the tricks of another family. And the head of that other family would be Samuel Jackson. And I had really convinced him! And then we had a panel discussion somewhere, and Richard Price, I’ll never forget that, said, “If David makes a movie on Wire, I’ll disown it!” And David said, ‘Yes, you’re right.’ … We were doing a panel discussion for the New York Times and I was like, ‘Damn, thank you, Mr. Price. Mr. Clockers! Who turned HIS book into a movie! Oh, I was so angry.
Richard Price is the award-winning novelist and screenwriter best known for the homeless, exuberant lifeand the 1992 book timekeepers, which Spike Lee adapted into a movie in 1995. This story was also about criminals trapped between the police and drug dealers, only in Brooklyn and not Baltimore. But Price worked well with David Simon and contributed to many screenplays Wire in the five seasons of the show. When Price spoke, David Simon listened.
Now that I know of a prequel of Wire It was a possibility, I really want to see it. I had never heard this story before, even though we researched it 10 fascinating behind-the-scenes facts about the HBO show . Some time ago we also discussed Wire versus breaking Bad to finally determine which TV series belonged to the top. Spoiler alert, both are great and must be seen.
It’s probably been too long since The Wire aired and coming back for a movie doesn’t make sense anymore. But it is interesting to note that The Sopranos creator David Chase is back in his fictional world the prequel of the sopranos The Many Saints of Newark , which was well received . So this kind of storytelling is possible. Look for more stories from our anniversary conversation with Wire problem as the summer progresses.
