Puerto Rican singer Daddy Yankee, famous for the hit “Despacito”, announced his retirement from reggaeton during the last show of the La Meta tour, at the Coliseu stadium, Puerto Rico. He surprised fans at the time by saying that it would be his last performance and that, from now on, he would dedicate his life to Jesus Christ.
After the surprising revelation, Yankee also invited fans to follow in his footsteps: “A successful life is no substitute for a purposeless life. That’s why, tonight, I realized that Jesus lives for me. And I will live for him. All tools that I have in my power, like music, social media, my platforms, my microphone… everything that God has given me will now serve him.”
He also posted a video of the speech on Instagram, adding: “This day for me is the most important day of my life… tonight I recognize and am not ashamed to tell the whole world that Christ lives in me and that I live for Him This is the end of a chapter and the beginning of a completely new one.” Then he also quoted St. Matthew.
The 46-year-old Puerto Rican was still at the height of his success, with his latest hit, “Legendaddy,” having racked up 200 million plays on Spotify.
Considered the king of reggaeton, Daddy Yankee began his career in the 1990s, influenced by Latin hip-hop. His best-known songs in Brazil are “Gasolina” and the phenomenon “Despacito”, which broke world performance records.
