Report ‘Engaging with Music 2023’, by IFPI, presents a study on music consumption in the world and is accompanied by a section of the Brazilian market
The IFPI (International Federation of the Phonographic Industry), which represents the recorded music industry worldwide, released the report Engaging with Music 2023, a global study that examines how people around the world engage, access and feel about music. The report is accompanied by a section of the Brazilian market, released by Pro-Música, an entity that brings together the main record companies and music producers in Brazil.
The survey reveals that the average time spent consuming music in the world has reached a new record: 20.7 hours per week. Brazilians surpass the world average, with 24.9 hours a week listening to music.
Based on responses from more than 43,000 people in 26 countries, the report is the largest global survey with this type of focus.
We are listening to more music than ever
In the world: 20.7 hours – the amount of time, on average, people spend listening to music per week (up from 20.1 hours in 2022). The growth in weekly listening time in 2023 meant thirteen additional three-minute songs per week this year on average.
In Brazil: that’s 24.9 hours a week listening to music, on average.
We are interacting with music through more methods
In the world: 79% of people are of the opinion that there are more ways to listen to music than ever before (compared to 76% in 2021). On average, people use more than seven different methods to interact with music.
In Brazil: 82% of the public think there are more ways to listen to music now than ever before. On average, Brazilians use 9 different methods to consume music.
Artificial intelligence
In the world: 79% agree that human creativity is essential for creating music.
In Brazil: 85% agree.
In the world: 74% of people who are aware of AI’s musical capabilities agree that AI should not be used to clone or impersonate musical artists without authorization.
In Brazil: 70% of music consumers think AI should not be used to clone or impersonate music artists without authorization.
Variety of genres
In the world: fans listen to over 8 different music genres on average.
In Brazil: there are more than 10 different musical genres heard, on average
Mental health and well-being
In the world: 71% say music is important for mental health.
In Brazil: 83% of people say the same.
Unlicensed music is still a significant problem
In the world: 29% use unlicensed or illegal means to listen to or obtain music.
In Brazil: 47% is the rate of music consumers through illegal or unlicensed methods.
Main reasons for subscribing to music streaming services
Among those who consume music through subscription audio streaming, 3 main reasons were highlighted for opting for the subscription model:
1. I can listen to what I want when I want;
2. Absence of advertisements interrupting the music;
3. Access to millions of songs.
