American rapper Tyler, The Creator apologized to Gilberto Gil during a phone call after the misuse of the song “Duplo Sentido” (1973). The conversation between the artists would have taken place on Tuesday (12/12), according to information from the columnist Mônica Bergamo, of the newspaper Folha de S. Paulo.
The situation occurred earlier this month, when the rapper launched a campaign for the Golf Le Fleur brand featuring the song composed by the Brazilian singer. The commercial lasts just over four minutes and details the brand’s new collection, but contains no mention of Gil or singer Tetê da Bahia.
Gilberto Gil’s consultant told g1 that publisher Sony Publishing “will ask for financial compensation”, as the campaign has been running for many days. Tyler acknowledged the mistake, declared himself a fan of Gil and assured that he had contacted people in Los Angeles (USA) to try to resolve the issue.
On social media, Gil’s profile shared a post by Fioti on the topic: “I love dear [Tyler, The Creator]. But he used an entire Gilberto Gil song without any prior dialogue and copyright negotiation? You can’t claim ignorance. I find it hard to believe that, if it were the other way around, the resolution would be amicable. This does not mean valuing Brazil. Not even the creators. I hope that everything is resolved in a fair and balanced way. But what hesitation.”
