The transformation of Bradley Cooper in the role of Leonard Bernstein is remarkable and involved hours of makeup and the use of prosthetics. The makeup artist Kazu Hirowinner of two Oscarsrevealed the complex process that allowed Cooper to become Bernstein during the Film Festival of New York. He explained that in the last step of the makeup, virtually every aspect of Cooper’s face was covered, including his costume and arms. This phase took more than 5 hours, showing the incredible commitment of the production team.
Makeup process
Hiro explained that the time in the makeup chair varied according to the different stages of a person’s life. Bernstein portrayed in the film. For the twenties phase, the process took two and a half hours, while other phases required two to three hours. As the character aged, more elements needed to be added, including the nose, lips, chin, wig, cheek, and neck.
The most challenging part was transforming Bradley Cooper in a man over 70 years old. Hiro shared that they started working on makeup at 1 a.m. so Cooper could appear as Lenny to prepare for filming and everything. This dedication required earlier than normal work schedules, making the process quite challenging.
