American-Brazilian music is part of Barack Obama’s list of the best of the year; know

Indigo de Souza is the daughter of a bossa nova musician; her song, ‘Younger & Dumber’, caught the attention of the former US president

On December 29, Barack Obama’s traditional list of the best books of the year was published, listing the best books, films and music of 2023 according to the former US president. The latter talks about a young singer from North Carolina, daughter of a Brazilian father and an American mother – both artists – who released her debut in 2018. Indigo de Souza and his “Younger & Dumber” was considered by Obama to be this year’s highlight.

The song appears on the independent singer’s third album, This will all end. “Younger & Dumber” is a ballad that reflects on a young adult’s dilemmas about growing up, in lines like “Sometimes I just don’t want to be alone/ And it’s not because I’m lonely/ It’s just that I get tired of filling up all the space around me.”

The clip features archival footage of the singer herself as a child. Her young discography is characterized by profound lyrics that reflect on life, death and family relationships: her debut album is titled I love my mother.

Brazilian father

The typically Brazilian surname does not contradict it: Indigo de Souza is the daughter of Arildo de Souza, a bossa-nova guitarist who grew up in Vitória (ES). Her influences range from bossa, folk and classic rock. In an interview with the site MindiesIndigo said she bonds with her father over the love they share of making music.

The 26-year-old singer also does not hide her difficult relationship with her father who, according to her, was absent after her divorce from her mother, when she was just 3 years old. “You weren’t here to watch me grow, to hurt, to learn the hard way,” she wrote in a social media post on Father’s Day this year. “But I forgive you for your absence and I know you wish you could have been there. I can hear it in your voice now,” she wrote, wishing her father “the most peaceful life.”

Indigo also revealed that her father faces financial difficulties in Brazil. In 2005, she released an album named after her daughter, Indigo.

Obama also demonstrates, once again, that he is abreast of new musical developments, including Mitsky, Great thief and Indigo de Souza itself as favourites.
