A Brazilian woman wins an opera singing competition in Barcelona in a contest with more than 500 participants


Born in Bauru, Marcela Rahal shared the prize with New Zealander Filipe Manu and won R$85,000; watch a video of her singing

The Brazilian Marcela Rahal won the 61st Viñas International Tenor Singing Competitioncompetition lyrical singing which took place on Friday 19th at the Gran Teatre del Liceu, in Barcelona, ​​Spain. She competed for the award with 524 entries, which were narrowed down to 17 finalists from 13 different countries.

The singer shared the award with New Zealander Filipe Manu. Each of them will receive 16 thousand euros (approximately R$ 85.6 thousand, at the current price), offered by Spanish classical music foundations, as announced by the competition on social media.

Founded in 1963, Tenor Viñas is one of the leading opera singing competitions in the world. This year the jury included renowned classical music artists and artistic directors from high schools, theaters and operas in Europe and the United States.

In addition to the cash prize, Marcela and Manu will receive a commemorative medal and will participate in the Winners’ Concert of the 61st Viñas Tenor Competition, which will be held on March 3, 2024 at the Teatro Real, in Madrid.

Born in Bauru, in the hinterland of São Paulo, Marcela graduated in singing from the University of São Paulo (USP) and completed a master’s degree in opera singing in Germany. Between 2013 and 2017, you participated in two opera studios in São Paulo, at EMESP Tom Jobim and at the Opera Academy at Theatro São Pedro.
