Johnny Ramone’s widow sues Netflix to stop biopic

Pete Davidson to Play Ramones Singer in ‘I Slept With Joey Ramone’

Linda RamoneJohnny Ramone’s widow has filed a lawsuit to block the biopic I slept with Joey Ramone, by Netflix, be produced. Actor Pete Davidson is cast as the lead singer of the punk band Ramones.

According to scoreboard, The lawsuit is not filed against the streaming service, but rather against Joey Ramone’s brother, Mickey Leigh, author of the book that inspired the film. “Letting Mickey Leigh alone be responsible for telling the story of the Ramones would be an injustice to the group and its legacy,” the lawsuit explains.

Since the early 2000s, when Mickey and Linda became administrators of Johnny and Joey’s estates respectively, the two have been embroiled in conflicts. Mickey filed a lawsuit against Linda in 2018, claiming that the widow “inappropriately used the Ramones name in several projects.”

At the time, the judge favored Mickey, but criticized the legal battles between the two: “They let their egos prevail over their obligations,” he explained.

Linda Ramone claims that even though the biopic focuses on the story of Mickey and Joey, the film should not be produced without her permission, as I slept with Joey Ramone it also addresses the coexistence between the singer and the guitarist of the punk band.

Linda’s lawyers accuse the film’s production of looking for ways to create the feature film without needing her widow’s approval, including possibly re-recording Ramones classics for use in the biopic.

The film is still in the early stages of development at Netflix.
