Globoplay prepares a series of documentaries on Belo’s life

Globoplay is producing a documentary series on the trajectory of singer Belo. The project was created by producer José Junior (“Arcanjo Renegado”) and promises to portray all the important moments of the artist’s life.

The work will consist of four episodes and will be produced by AfroReggae Audiovisual from a screenplay by Gustavo Gomes (“Predestinado”), who also directs together with Jorge Espírito Santo (“Isso Tem Nome”). There is no premiere date yet.

“Belo is the Roberto Carlos of the favela, a phenomenon from the nineties to the present day. In the documentary we will present different facets of him, many unknown, like his grandfather Belo. He agreed to talk about everything”, said José Junior, in an interview to the newspaper O Globo.

Successful career and legal problems

Singer Belo began his performing career in the early 1990s when he only played the cavaquinho and his life changed when he arrived in Soweto. In 1997, the group gained a legion of fans after releasing “Refém do Coração”, their second album and first for a major label.

However, the pagodeiro ventured into a solo career and sold more than a million records in 2000. But success came along with legal problems due to the breach of contract with former player Denílson, who had purchased the rights of the Soweto group. They fought a million-dollar debt battle for more than 20 years, but reached an installment agreement in 2023.

Furthermore, Belo was also convicted of drug trafficking and drug trafficking association in 2003, when he had to serve four years in prison. Ten years later he was charged with embezzlement and conspiracy for allegedly defrauding an air taxi company. In 2017, he was accused of having rent debts totaling R$500,000.
