The rockstar that Wolfgang Van Halen wants to be like when he grows up (not his father)

Although he has enormous admiration for the late Eddie Van Halen, the musician reveals that he has another, even greater inspiration

What musician wouldn’t want to have a father like Eddie Van Halen? Wolfgang He hit the jackpot in this sense, as he created one of the greatest guitarists of all time — not surprisingly, he also became a very talented musician, to the point of taking on vocals and all the instruments of his own project, Mammoth WVH.

However, even though he admires his late father, Wolfgang revealed that he wants to be like another rockstar “when he grows up”. The musician born in 1991 cited Dave Grohlleader of Foo Fighters and former drummer of Nirvanalike his real star role model.

The subject was discussed in an interview with Amoeba Music (via Guitar.com). In this ocasion, Wolfgang I participated in a panel where I selected records I liked. When going through the new album by Foo Fighters, But Here We Arehe praised the idol:

This is a very emotional album. I love him Foo Fighters and if anyone knows my music, they know that Dave Grohl is who I want to be when I grow up. And I’m already over 30 years old.

The son of Eddie Van Halen said that Grohl it even inspired the format of his band in the studio.

Everything I did on the first album Mammoth WVH… I played all the instruments on the record, just like he did on the first album Foo Fighters. Therefore, he has always been an infinite inspiration.

Finally, the resilience of Dave when continuing with the Foo Fighters after the loss of Taylor Hawkinsdrummer and great friend, in March 2022, was highlighted:

Above all, losing Taylorwhich was the worst, made this entire album incredibly emotional.

Wolfgang Van Halen’s rock god

This was not the first time that Wolfgang Van Halen revealed to admire Dave Grohl. In an interview with the program The Rock Show with Johnnie Walkerfrom the BBC (via Blabbermouth), the son of Eddie Van Halen was invited to choose his “rock god”, in an already notorious scenario in the attraction. He replied:

I choose Dave Grohl because he inspires me endlessly — in the art of composition and in his ability as a musician. I really admire how he came from Nirvana and then, after the sad end, how he was able to build his own thing with the Foo Fighters. It’s how I mirror a lot of my experience, where I came from and what I tried to do on my own. He is simply everything I aspire to be.

On the occasion, he also told how he discovered the band Grohl and what it felt like.

I first became aware of him when (the fifth album by Foo Fighters) ‘In Your Honor’ (was released in 2005) and I heard ‘Best of You’. The song always got stuck in my head. And it always stuck in my head how he made everything better — his songwriting, his singing. Yes, I think that’s why maybe I admire him so much. He really is everything I aspire to be, especially after getting to know him a little and spending a little time with him… there is nothing better than admiring someone, then meeting him in person and realizing that he is everything and much more.

It is worth remembering that the two shared the stage during the events in tribute to Taylor Hawkins, in September 2022, in both London and Los Angeles. On the occasion, they played songs from Van Halen together, with Wolfgang on guitar and Dave at the bottom.
