Women dominate the 2024 Grammys; find out how to watch, the nominees and who will be performing

Taylor Swift, Lana Del Rey and SZA stand out in the top three categories; The list of candidates also includes The Beatles, Metallica, Jon Batiste and Ivan Lins; see list

A 66th Grammy Awards, which will be held this Sunday 4th, with live broadcast (see how to watch it below), has some surprises in store. The largest of these is the record number of female nominations in the prize’s noblest categories. In Record of the Year, seven compete – SZA, Miley Cyrus, Billie Eilish, Victoria Monet, Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo and the independent trio Boygenius – and only one man, the pianist Jon Baptista trend that is also repeated in the Album of the Year and Song of the Year categories: in addition to representation, this fact indicates a current trend in the industry to enhance the female point of view through lyrics and performances.

As a result, they are also the majority of presentations confirmed for this Sunday’s ceremony. Figures like Joni Mitchell, who makes his debut as a musical attraction at the awards ceremony after more than 50 years of career and 9 trophies, SZA, the champion of nominations this year – competing in nine categories, something unprecedented in her career -, the young Billie Eilish and Olivia Rodrigo and Dua Lipa with their pop disco. Added to the list are the legendary Billy Joel and rapper Travis Scott, as well as Nigerian Burna Boy and country singer Luke Combs.

Rewards over time

From the first Grammy Disco of the Year awarded to a woman – to the Brazilian Astrud Gilberto, for her emblematic version of The girl from Ipanemin collaboration with Stan Getz, in 1965 – became prominent in this category. Some of the winners were Carole King, Tina Turner, Céline Dion, Norah Jones, Amy Winehouse and Adele. Taylor Swift has been one of the most nominated singers in the last 10 years, but she has yet to take home the award. She this year she competes again with Anti hero.

Brazilians at the 2024 Grammys

This year too there are Brazilian women nominated: Eliane Elias AND Luciana Souza & Trio Corrente compete for Best Latin Jazz Album. Among men, Ivan Lins also represents Brazil in the category.

Movement

In 2024, women also lead in the biggest categories (album, recording and song): SZA, Taylor Swift and Olivia Rodrigo were nominated in all three, along with singer Jon Batiste, following a trend in recent years of awards, which already aimed at increasing their participation.

In total, the most nominations went to SZA (9), Victoria Monét and Phoebe Bridgers (7) and Olivia Rodrigo, Miley Cyrus and Billie Eilish and Brandy Clark (6), tied with Jon Batiste and producer Jack Antonoff.

This change of scenery was born from a request from the public itself. In 2018, only one woman won the trophy (Alessia Cara of New Artist), inciting criticism among viewers and members of the music industry. Soon, the hashtag #GrammySoMale (“Grammy so masculine”) gained prominence on the networks. From that point on, the awards began to have greater gender representation.

However, it cannot be ignored that even in the field of interpreters, awards dedicated to women continue. The industry still needs to focus – and invest – in the work of manufacturers and other more technical categories. This year only Elaine Martone represents women in this category.
