The film will adapt the iconic Broadway musical that tells the story of Elphaba, from the world of “The Wizard of Oz.”
Universal Pictures has released the first teaser for ‘Evil’adaptation of the famous Broadway musical inspired by the universe ofThe Wizard of Oz’which features the actress Cynthia Erivo and the singer Ariana Grande, respectively witches Elphaba and Glinda. In the preview, Glinda shows surprise when she realizes that Elphaba is green. There are also scenes full of visual effects to materialize the city of Oz, as well as the Wizard’s meeting with Dorothy and her fabulous friends. Even so, there are no musical pieces in the material.
“Wicked” tells the story of the “Wizard of Oz” through the eyes of Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West. The plot tells her origin story and shows how she gained a reputation for being evil, despite the relationship she initially had with Glinda.
On display since 2003, the show is based on the book “Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West”, by Gregory Maguire, a sort of prelude to ‘The Wizard of Oz’. The plot references the classic 1939 film and features events that take place before and after Dorothy’s arrival in Oz, proving that every story has different points of view and that being different is what makes each person unique.
The film production will be divided into two parts and is directed by Jon M. Chu, who is filming his second musical, after signing ‘In a Neighborhood of New York’ (2021).
Screenwriter Winnie Holsman (creator of the cult series ‘My So-Called Life’) and composer Stephen Schwartz, author of the music for the stage show, wrote the screenplay and the musical adaptation, and the cast also includes Jeff Goldblum (‘ Jurassic World : Dominion’) as the Wizard of Oz, Michelle Yeoh (‘Everything in Every Place at Once’) as Madame Morrible and Jonathan Bailey (‘Bridgerton’) as Fiyero.
The film will be released in two parts, the first of which will be released in Brazilian cinemas on November 28, one day after its release in the United States. Check out the trailer below.
