Gal Costa’s son leaves the singer’s house over an inheritance dispute

Gabriel da Costa, only son of Gal Costa (1945-2022), left the house where he lived with his mother and widow, Wilma Petrillo. After turning 18 and freeing himself from Wilma’s guardianship, he went to court to contest the share that the former businesswoman was demanding of Gal’s inheritance. The boy claims that the woman was not the artist’s wife and, therefore, would not have the right to the assets left by her. The heir lived with Gal Costa and Wilma Petrillo in a house located in Jardim Europa, an exclusive neighborhood in the west of Sao Paulo. He did not reveal where he went, but his lawyers said Gabriel will live alone.

Will and Gal Costa Foundation

One of Gabriel Costa’s lawyers, Luci Ferreira Nunes, told the Folha de S. Paulo newspaper that Wilma knew she would not be entitled to anything. According to the defender, the voice of “Chuva de Prata” signed a will before adopting the boy and dictated that all her assets be donated to the Gal Costa Foundation. Wilma was a witness on the day of the signing.

With the singer’s death, Gabriel was placed in Wilma’s temporary custody as he was still 17 years old. In November 2022, he found the documents expressing Gal’s final wishes and waited until he reached adulthood before he could file a lawsuit on his own.

Now he tries to prevent the widow from taking her mother’s inheritance. According to Gabriel Costa, Wilma was always treated by him as his “godmother”, and she and the singer did not live as a couple.

Administration of assets and request for a stable union

Wilma Petrillo was appointed administrator of Gal Costa’s estate shortly after her death. The former businesswoman has started the process of opening the inventory of assets and asked the court to be recognized in a stable union with Gal: if her request was accepted, according to the law she would be entitled to a part of the ‘inheritance. Gabriel Costa disputes her statements.

Wilma’s bid for a stable union stalled in July last year due to opposition from Costa. At the time, at the age of 17, he was summoned to give his opinion on the relationship, but he expressed his opposition through the public defender’s office. Wilma then submitted a new request to the court, but the judge ordered them to wait until Gabriel reached the age of majority.
