The actor and singer was on the program ‘Altas Horas’ and talked about the day he went to help the American woman who was lying on a beach in Rio de Janeiro
The actor and singer Tony Tornado he was one of the guests on the program High hoursfrom TV Globo, Saturday evening, 24. Tony took part in a tribute to the 70s and sang the song BR-3a great success at the International Song Festival in 1971.
Tony, 93, recalled many stories from his early career to presenter Serginho Groisman. In the 1970s, having just arrived from the United States, where he lived for a period, he went to work as a bouncer in nightclubs in Rio de Janeiro. At the time he was also performing as a singer.
One day, he was called by the rocker Serguei to help a woman who was lying on the beach. Tony says:
“One night, Serguei called me and said, ‘There’s a girl lying on the beach, who, believe it or not, is the Janis Joplin.’ I took Janis in my arms, I was very strong at that moment, I carried her from the beach, I came with her to the disco where we sang, I bathed her, we put her on the stage and she sang until 7 in the morning . In the morning there was already a fire engine at the door, there was a lot of crowd.”
The nightclub in question was Porão 73, in the Leme neighborhood, in the south of Rio de Janeiro. Janis would have tried to organize an outdoor show, but the pressure of the military dictatorship then in force in Brazil meant that the singer’s plans did not go ahead.
As well as singing – and getting up badly – Janis also took part in samba school parades in Rio and visited Bahia. Janis died approximately eight months into her stay in the country.
