The musician revealed the true inspiration behind the iconic song’s lyrics in his podcast, “A Life in Lyrics”
After six decades of its release, the song Yesterdayof the Beatlesits true meaning was recently revealed by Paul McCartney. During the podcast A life in lyricsin which the legendary musician revisits the stories behind his most famous compositions, McCartney shared the inspiration behind one of the song’s most moving lyrics.
According to him, the line “I said something wrong” was inspired by a moment of regret in which he mocked his mother for looking “too chic”. “I remember very clearly one day feeling very embarrassed because I was embarrassing my mother,” McCartney recalled in the latest episode.
Born in Liverpool, the musician later explained that his mother, Mary, was a nurse of Irish descent and spoke in a “sophisticated” way compared to the rest of the family.
He recalled that it came to his attention while he was in the backyard of his childhood home. “I know he said something like ‘Paul, can you ask him if he’s going…’. I said ‘Asrk? Asrk? It’s asking, Mom.’ And she was a little embarrassed. I remember afterwards thinking ‘God, I wish I’d never said that’. And that stuck with me. After he died, I thought ‘Oh, man, I really wish…’.”
McCartney, who was 24 when he wrote the song, said he initially rejected someone’s suggestion that the song was inspired by Mary’s death from cancer when she was 14.
Yesterday It is one of the most played songs of all time and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1997.
