Ponta da Língua arrives on platforms on the 1st and shows the maturation of the Pernambuco singer, who reveals anxieties and desires in the new tracks.
One of the most interesting voices in this new crop of good Brazilian music comes from Recife. Sofia Freire, 27 years old, mixes regional references, such as cheesy, psychedelicism, dark pop and a cosmic sound to build the sounds of his third studio album. In blood, DNA from Wilson Freirepartner of Antonio Nóbrega, one of the most celebrated musicians from Pernambuco who inspired her through the technique, discipline and sensitivity of her art. Entitled Tip of the tonguethe nine-track album arrives on streaming platforms with exclusive viewers this March 1st.
“The album was born after a distressing creative block that lasted many months. I raised many questions that remain latent until now. This is certainly why I am today an artist who is more attentive to the playfulness of my creative process, embracing more of my creative and personal autonomy, which I believe go hand in hand. A lot has happened since the launch of Romã and the period of social isolation was very conducive to taking this internal dive.”
Sofiawho is a pianist by training, as well as a singer, mixes references that range from Cibo Matto with Tetê Espíndola and Björk, and new references in contemporary harmony in construction. She says that “for the album, I looked a lot like the sound of kate bush in The Sensual World and 90s trip hop artists like Cibo Matto, Lamb and Björk continues to be a great influence. Tetê Espíndola was a great reference for me to explore other spaces in my voice. The disk The Low End Theoryin A Tribe Called Quest, guided and inspired me a lot in working with samples. I also studied contemporary harmony, which brought me closer to a language that was a little more jazzy and less classical. Not to mention the Ave Sangria, which inspires me in psychedelia.”

“If I break the margins that enclose me, I become indefinite, without contours, malleable and multiple, and I feel that only then can I go from one place.” Tip of the tongue, Sofia it gives vent to limits and anxieties.
The maturity revealed in PDL reflects an understanding of Sofia about herself as an artist. “Today I understand that the voice is my main instrument, and new songs are much more guided by it and synthesizers, perhaps my two main fields of musical research”. The process that gave rise to the disc shows the Sofia in all processes, from composition to visual post-production. “All tracks are my own compositions, except Inside of mewhich is a partnership with my singer-songwriter friend Igor de Carvalho. In Arrebento, the artist started from a very personal feeling of inadequacy “which is difficult to describe and which I tried a little through this song. I have understood non-places as the most possible way to behave but, in truth, I feel that I don’t linger in the spaces I am in. I think my creative process involves a lot of this, trying to break with expectations (mine and external)”.
Tip of the tongue, the track that gives the album its name, is definitive for understanding the singer’s phase. Born from a special emotional place for Sofia. “It’s like a prayer, reminding me of who I am and why I’m here. She talks about being loyal to your desire for freedom, for sincere relationships, for opening yourself to new things and how to have courage you must first have fear, but the fear that reveals nothing should not take you. If I were to summarize, I would say that, in the end, it’s all about two things: discernment and expression, with the language being the vector organ for them.
Tip of the tonguewas recorded in Recife, was mixed and co-produced by Homer Basilio. It has mastering work for Buguinha Dub and for each of the nine tracks they have exclusive visualizers.
