Leo Middea is a finalist at the Portuguese Song Festival

The carioca Leo Middea is the first Brazilian in 60 years to become a finalist in the Portuguese Song Festivala contest that decides who will represent the country in the Eurovision. The 28-year-old is participating with “Doce Mistério”, a song that makes references to MPB.

With the reach of more people, Middea was also a victim of xenophobia: “The attacks started when the song was released, in January. But, after I became the first Brazilian in a Song Festivalthings took on another proportion”, he said in an interview with Folha de S.Paulo. “People talking about my accent as if it were something disgusting, as if it were something that wasn’t good to hear. Really, very mean things.”

“I was unsure about exposing this situation, but then I felt relieved. Now I have received many messages of support. I didn’t know what was going to happen, but there has been a wave of love that has been very beautiful to follow,” he continued.

The artist moved to Lisbon in 2017. Still, he maintained his Brazilian roots: “When they invited me, I decided to make music as I always do, without adapting. Brazilian music integrating everything, like I’ve always done here in Portugal” .
