The video selection includes collaborations with guitarists from Oasis and Stone Roses and several new bands, from punk to twee
The Modern Playlist returns with 50 latest clips with almost 3 hours of continuous music, in a selection with a lot of alternative rock. The list opens with modern and old-time Britpop, including new ’90s artists such as the band Kula Shaker and a partnership between guitarists Liam Gallagher (Oasis) and John Squire (Stone Roses), who on Friday released a joint album – Friday (1/3).
Another name from the British scene of the 90s, Laetitia Sadier, singer of Stereolab, reveals a new song from her solo career in a foray into shoegazer psychedelia. Also from the same decade, the American punk band Alkaline Trio illustrates the variety of styles present, in an electrified collection that still includes the garage rock of other veteran groups, Be Your Own Pet and The Black Keys, formed at the turn of the century. .
The majority of the selection, however, is full of recent bands, such as the Americans Omni, Sub Pop’s post-punk bet, far from the grunge that made the Seattle label popular, or Brigitte Calls Me Baby, inspired by the Smiths ( via Roy Orbison). There’s also Ducks Ltd., which sounds halfway between REM and Teenage Fanclub (via The Byrds), and the cutesy Touch Girl Apple Blossom, which evokes the sound of legendary indie label Sarah Records. Plus, female trio Shadow Show deliver the best garage rock revival of the ’60s and The Chisel proves that punk isn’t dead in the UK.
As always, videos are organized by sound affinity in a playlist – to watch on Smart TV, look for Cast in Chrome’s Settings tab or More Tools/Stream etc. on Edge -, with the aim of inserting a sequence that enhances the impression of video/mixtape recording. Try listening without skipping tracks on the Premium version of YouTube (without ad breaks). Or just press play and forget it.
