“I Kind of Relate” clip offers new details about sexual abuse committed by dialogue coach Brian Peck and scenes reminiscent of “Drake & Josh”
Drake Bell released the music video for “I Kind of Relate” on Monday (3/18) with several autobiographical elements, including the sexual abuse he suffered as a teenager. The artist’s traumatic experience was recently revealed in the American press, when he claimed to have been abused by dialogue coach Brian Peck.
The clip begins with a young boy reading his jokes in front of the TV and ends up being interrupted by a grown man holding his hand, referring to Peck’s abuse. The two then enter a trailer and the boy closes the curtains. Drake Bell’s name is written on the young man’s chair.
From then on, the video takes on a more frenetic pace, as Drake appears bloodied on his way to the operating room after being involved in a car accident. Shortly afterwards, the singer appears surrounded by people in an alleged collective therapy session.
“I kind of relate, I’ve found beauty in my pain. I’m running away from the abuse and all the shame. Because nobody comes to my house anymore, nobody knocks on my door. I kind of relate. The bad decisions that I took. I wanted to stay, but I couldn’t stay another day. My glory days seem so distant and gray. So, I’m running away,” says an excerpt of the song.
The clip also features scenes in a room similar to that of half-brothers Drake Parker and Josh Nichols (Josh Peck) in the acclaimed series “Drake & Josh” on Nickelodeon. “This song was inspired by my past and now that my story is being told. I felt it was the right time to share it,” the artist wrote in the video’s caption.
