Assucena reinterprets Gal’s classics in homage to the singer who inspired her

The singer and songwriter presented this Wednesday, 20th, the show Gal- Baby Te Amo, as part of the Rolling Stone Sessions project

declared fan of Gal Costa, Assucena kicked off his solo career with a show in honor of the singer called I laugh and I can also cry. A tribute to 50 years of Fatal – Gal At Full Steam (1971). In 2023 she launched Lusco Fusco, first album of the new phase. Last Wednesday, 20th, at the invitation of the project Rolling Stone Sessionsthe artist takes the stage at the Blue Note, in São Paulo, to present a show in tribute to the singer.

Gal – Baby Te Amo is the name of the show that begins with one of the most iconic songs recorded by the Tropicália muse. With the room still dark except for a low red light, Assucena takes the stage singing “Unholy Cow.”

Accompanied by Rafael Acerbi — who was also part of the band The Bays — The artist brought reinterpretations of classics and lesser-known songs from her repertoire Galadding touches of your own personality, as a good tribute should be done.

Assucena She also showed that she knows how to enchant the audience like the great music divas do. Between one song and another she would make a joke, tell fun facts between songs and even toast the audience with a glass of whiskey which, according to her, was “very good.”

Back to the songs, between one classic and another — and amid requests from the public — the singer deviated a little from the songbook of Gal to present “Naked,” from the debut album Lusco Fusco (2023) and “A Song for You (Yellow Jacket)“, d’The Bays. Fitted into the setlist at strategic moments, the songs did not allow the tribute to Gal to be overshadowed, but allowed Assucena would show the artistic signature he has been building in these years on the road.

Another high point was the version with electronic beats of “Cheap Steam” which, if it was already on point with the singer’s voice accompanied by Rafael’s guitar, gained a special touch with the clapping and the voices of the audience who, at this point in the performance, were already completely mesmerized.

At a certain point it no longer felt like we were in São Paulo. Assucena transported us to another place where all there was was the stage, the audience and the music. The powerful voice that could be heard even far from the microphone and the accurate chords of the guitar and acoustic guitar. More than just one singer paying homage to another, we saw a passionate fan — accompanied by many other passionate fans — paying homage to her muse.
