Umbrella Academy’s Aidan Gallagher and Ritu Arya discuss Lila’s naked fight, meeting the Old Five and what happened to Stan

Major spoilers below for season 3 of the Umbrella Academyso walk carefully between the timelines if you haven’t seen it yet!

With his expected return to netflix subscribers Around the world, the Umbrella Academy Season 3 opens with a glorious whirlwind of a hallucinatory dance game on Kenny Loggins’ “Footloose,” which basically meant all bets were wrong for what the rest of the season could offer. (With the “Total Eclipse of the Heart” karaoke absolutely included there.) So it was only natural to see how the combined and respective stories of Five and Lila included their usurper parental advice about a child who ends up being cut out of existence. , as well as meeting an old version of Five addicted to the lung of steel just before his death, and arguably the best fight sequence in the series to date, in which one of the characters was naked.

This is what fans expect the Umbrella Academy – perhaps not so specifically on the nose – and stars Aidan Gallagher and Ritu Arya spoke with Gossipify and other outlets about the chaos that developed during Season 3. So let’s dive into what they shared with me regarding the twists mentioned above.

Lila and Five fight in The Umbrella Academy

Best Match Ever: Five vs. Lilac, bathroom scenery

the Umbrella Academy is no stranger to fight scenes that boost the superpowers of different characters, and the tide has skyrocketed in season 3 thanks to the arrival of the various members of the Sparrow Academy , each with their own unique abilities. But arguably the best action pop of the season involved minimal CGI powers and a lot of ingenious footage. The third episode brought together opponents Five and Lila (in her birthday costume) for the first time this season with a bathroom fight in earnest. When I asked star Ritu Arya on stage, here’s how she started her response:

I think he remains alone. Well, it wasn’t originally in the script. And Steve Blackman has been a while, well he’s just an amazing contributor and always encourages our ideas. So I felt that something was missing between Lila and Five where they left off in season 2. So I suggested, could there be some kind of battle or some kind of brawl when we first met? And he liked the idea. So, you know, I was like, ‘He won’t wear clothes. She is not lilac. It’s like, attack. She is so uninhibited. You don’t care about these things, do you? So it just happened.

It’s nice to know that no one wrote this scene in advance and I was just hoping that Ritu Arya would automatically take a choreographed sequence in any state of undress. So thanks to her for helping her bring her ideas to life. That said, it is completely different to design it than to put it into practice. But they found the best way to punch two birds in the throat with one fist, so to speak, during all the planning stages. Arya went on to say:

And then I figured out the logistics of that, because, you know, they can’t show anything. . . . So during rehearsals we had the camera with us trying to figure out what we could actually shoot and which moves would work given these restrictions. And I think it worked. It was really a lot of fun. And that particular scene on set kept getting postponed just because of the scheduling. So that meant we had to add a lot of things, so it got bigger than it originally, I think, could have been. And they liked it, so they put it away. We had a lot of fun filming it.

Aidan Gallagher shared his thoughts on the fight scene following his co-star’s demise, agreeing that ultimately were his two best fight sequences to date.

It’s probably like my favorite fight scene I’ve ever shot. I think it also has the most realistic movements. Like everything you see it is actually equipment that would be used in a combat scenario.

Beyond the exciting reasons why Lila and Five’s fight is memorable, one of the best things is the precise way the moves and tweaks work specifically to avoid overt nudity. It’s a weird ability to clap, but I will.

Old Five at the Umbrella Academy

Aidan Gallagher on Five’s anger over his firstborn

Already with season 2 he put Cinque in the middle of his paradoxical psychosis while the assassination of Kennedy was taking place, the Umbrella Academy Season 3 quickly delves into the concept of the grandfather paradox as a way to explain the universe-sucking kugelblitz. So what better way to put an end to Five’s mini-quest for answers in Episode 4 than for his Operations Bunker discovery to be another version of himself? Only this time the other version was much older, close to death, and perhaps even further away from empathy. It was hard to tell if he was simply hopeless or maliciously enigmatic when he told Cinque not to save the world, given how it all turned out.

When I asked Aidan Gallagher to reunite with a Bigger Five for this sequence, he spoke highly of the inherent angst and aggression that always builds up in his character, saying:

Well, I think it has to do with a lot of self-hatred that he has. Yes, he doesn’t like who he is, but he is a rather malevolent entity who relies on his family ties and wants to resolve the trauma of his youth, which is the vicious apocalypse he was forced to grow up into. . in. This, coupled with his love for his family, is what makes him a good person, but yeah, he’s pretty vicious. Meeting another version of yourself is, more often than not, frustrating, simply because your personality has so much friction.

Ideally, Five could settle in a quiet place with occasional access to family members who bother him the least, and the apocalypse would be over. But ideals don’t really exist in this universe, so Five has to face himself and hate him. According to Gallagher:

With this particular case, some advice is given. and there is nothing else [besides Older Five] Who can you turn to with the latest kugelblitz threat and not have a solution, that being told “Do nothing” is so irritating. This is meant to be a future version of himself that helps this version of himself to exist. Like, ‘You: help me. Give me something here. There is a lot of anger in this particular encounter, and it doesn’t even have to do with the paradox of psychosis that only the two Fives are side by side. It’s just self-hatred, I suppose.

Although Five showed signs of paradoxical psychosis with itching, sweating, and farts, the symptoms weren’t as prevalent, as the younger version of the body wasn’t motivated to physically confront each other in a timeline-changing way. (I mean, it is still a pocket option.) Aidan Gallagher seemed to read Old Five’s “do nothing” advice as if it fell on the apocalyptic side of things, as opposed to the secret side of saving the world, so maybe the grumpy old man just wanted to destroy everything first. versions of him have achieved such a state of gray hair. Time is hard.

Stan before disappearing in The Umbrella Academy

Ritu Arya and Aidan Gallagher share their thoughts on Stan’s disappearance

Now we come to one of the most heartbreaking twists the Umbrella Academy fell into the lap of viewers in the third season: The Disappearance and Inexplicable Fate of Stan by Javon Walton. While it obviously wouldn’t have been as tragic as if Lila hadn’t lied and Stan was actually her son, he’s still SOMEONE’s son, even though his mother tends to leave him alone while hanging out with the musicians. So it’s a real conversation star in itself.

But here’s the conversation Aidan Gallagher and Ritu Arya had when I asked the actress if, at least in her mind, Lila and Diego would try to find Stan wherever he was.

  • rite: In my heart, I think, yes, as they should. We fell in love with him, you know? He is a great character. It would be sad to let him go, but he might not even be in your control. He is not the only person.
  • Aidan: We don’t know, they didn’t tell us. We don’t know what will happen if we get a season 4. Not everyone understands that.
  • rite: So I say, in my heart, I want it. Because I was a little surprised just reading the script. Like, ‘Where is Stan? Will he return? And then the season ended, and I said “No”. We never came to the conclusion to find it. But we’re also in this fun transition phase where we’re in this realm, we don’t have our powers and we’ll have to figure out what’s going to happen.
  • Aidan: It’s a big move though, like when it disappears. It’s like a punch in the stomach, it’s like looking at him, because you’ve come to love this character.
  • rite: It is also the end of the world. So I think there’s a lot to worry about anyway.

Obviously no one knows what the future holds the Umbrella Academy regarding a possible fourth season. But considering it has been No. 1 in Netflix’s daily Top 10 since its release, that fallen off Strange things Season 4 Kingdom I wouldn’t be surprised at all if a renewal announcement is forthcoming. But will it contain information on where Stan is? No, unless the ad is coming from Netflix from another timeline where press releases provide such information.

The three seasons of the Umbrella Academy are available to stream now netflix (opens in a new tab) with many other great shows available to stream for fans looking for food in the same odd stadium as the Oblivion Hotel.
