The horror genre has been on the air lately, with some of the more recent original concepts making their way to theaters thanks to Blumhouse. this is the case with the black phone starring Ethan Hawke and was released in theaters last weekend. And director Scott Derrickson recently explained to Gossipify the “scary” reason why he included the Super 8 movie in both. the black phone and his previous horror film Complaint.
Thanks to Scott Derrickson it might be a household name his leadership work strange doctor , but deep down he’s a horror fan. His films the black phone Yes Complaint have some similarities: they star Ethan Hawke and feature stunning footage shot on a Super 8 movie. 8 works so well in the genre. As he says,
They’re shot on a real Super 8 movie. And I know there are things in the apps and there are programs you can use in editing to make things look Super 8. Nothing looks and doesn’t feel like a real Super 8 movie. It’s very grainy. And when you blow it up, especially on the big screen, the grain is very distinctive. Color, the way it captures color is different. It always felt like this to me, and that includes the Super 8 movies my grandfather made and watched on my projector at home as a kid. They always scare me a little.
To see your work in both Complaint Yes the black phone, you can’t deny that Scott Derrickson is right. Super 8 is truly creepy, especially once it’s scaled to the big screen for a horror movie. And perhaps nowhere is this more evident than in the way he used Super 8 in his previous horror film.
2012 Complaint introduces Ethan Hawke like a real criminal who discovers horrible violence ea demon named Bughuul . During his journey, he discovers a Super 8 movie about various murders committed by children possessed by the devil. Each is creepier than the next, largely due to the creepy look of the images.
In the black phonewe also see Super 8 spread throughout the 103-minute length of the film. The young protagonists Gwen’s sister (Madeleine McGraw) has psychic visions throughout the film and sees Ethan Hawke’s villain, The Grabber, kidnap her young victims. This is when these sinister images are used, with powerful results. Later in our own conversation, Scott Derrickson explained this choice by saying:
They just feel a little pissed off, they feel creepy, they feel like they are catching something that maybe they weren’t meant to catch. There is something about the aesthetic that is truly unique. So I was very fascinated by it in Sinister. And then I felt like Gwen’s dreams in The Black Phone were reminiscent of the lives and abductions of these different children, I thought it was a great way to separate it from the rest of the visual material.
For those who don’t remember, you can check out Super 8’s completely chilling scenes from Complaint down. But buckle up, they’re creepy and probably NSFW. However, there’s no denying how much the film itself helps set the tone.
Horror fans were thrilled that Scott Derrickson had returned to the horror genre he was with the black phone. And his latest collaboration with Ethan Hawke proved to be a critical favorite , with an 84% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The film also did quite well at the box office during the opening weekend.
