Ruby gemstone is known to bring protection and good luck. In music, the strength that this jewel represents is perhaps what reflects the emergence of an artist who emerges to empower other women too. We are talking about Rubysinger who launched, this Friday (5), the first album of career.

Not for nothing, the name of the first Ruby disc called Attitude. It really takes a lot of this behavior to be able to fight for a place in the sun in the crazy and demanding world of music. But, apparently, strength is what he has the most.

“I think this is the best feedback I can get, because it was exactly the intention behind the name, the choice of the name of the album.”

Singer and songwriter born in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Ruby has been singing since she was three years old. But she knows that, as a woman, black and with origins that deviate from the “standard” established by a society that she refuses to move forward with, she has a lot to say.

“It’s a two-way street. I take this space to give a voice, but also to be heard. The ruby has this association with the gemstone, which is also part of the region I come from, known for its fertile soil, but the he inspiration came from Ruby Bridges, the first black child to attend a segregationist school in the U.S. When I connected with Ruby’s story, I was going through a hair transition process and other issues that also involved race, racism structurally in our country “.

Ruby said she started studying a lot about figures that have a representation, because she grew up with the feeling of being absent, of looking and not seeing herself in places and with this distinction.

“We have names like Beyoncé, Rihanna, which are some exceptions of singers who have been part of the growth of several black girls, but within our country we have few representatives. We have Alcione, several with names, but within the market you are you look at compared to men is tiny. It’s a daily struggle to gain space, not only as a singer, songwriter, in the various areas of entertainment. And to bring a message that goes beyond entertainment. Messages, thoughts and questions that make us evolve in some way so that people have more space, so that they are welcomed, so that we can talk, but attention is a main factor that will determine whether what we say is absorbed.”

The album, the first of his career, also has the responsibility of being a channel of messages.

“This album is about trying to be for these other girls who are the same age group as me as I grew up and tried to find myself and fit in, so that they can have that reference too and know that they can do it too they can express themselves through art, music, dance and even thoughts. We need to have possibilities, because the more possibilities, the more diversity we can bring to life and we are happier when we have space to be ourselves […]. It’s to show girls that in addition to dreaming, they have to act, get what they want, fight to really get what they want. It’s a process that very much reflects the entire process of building the album.”

Influences and inspirations

Ruby’s musical influences range from jazz, R&B, hip-hop, black music by singers such as Nina Simone, Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill, to Beyoncé and Rihanna. This leads her to follow a somewhat “lonely” path, far from what currently sells best, which is popular, such as country music.

But Ruby said challenging herself and fighting for what she believes in is also part of the “attitude” she wants to show with her work.

“I believe that it is very difficult for the artist to bring together what is already happening, with what is already moving, especially when it comes to industry, because to produce he needs to sell. All the work is very expensive. It is a way middle ground that we have to find at some point […]. I really wanted to be able to explore styles that are ours, that are part of our culture, but that people aren’t exploring here yet. […]. I decided to start from Afrobeat, to arrive at something that was closer and that could mix with funk, which is a style that is more familiar to us, and then I made this fusion. I also brought Rincon Sapiência, who is from Sao Paulo and who already brings Afrobeat into his work, IZRRA from Rio, Baco who composes with me there from Bahia. I was able to follow this path by traveling to multiple places, but in one job.”

With 11 new songs, the album brings a more urban concept that, as the singer explained, mixes sounds to show who she is. Thinking of these 11 songs was a challenge.

“There is a great diversity of producers within the album and that was one of the concerns about how it would sound uniformly. Listening to it, we were able to find a sonic vein that connected, as it has a more urban sound , move on to the styles that speak a lot to each other, which is funk, afrobeat. There is also the pagodão of Bahia, which is a style that predominates in the north-east and I wanted to bring it too, because I wanted to be able to do it, even if I am from Minas, to the transition to various styles that speak to the country and make people understand that music is music. There are artists who like to represent a musical style, but I have a musical perception so I really like to move between styles and make music, the important thing is that the music is beautiful, that it can touch me in some way.”

The artist also participated in all processes involved in the project. To make the mix of ideas and concepts work, he involved great personalities: the American producer Obie Bryan, who produced great names in international music, such as Bon Jovi.

“The way I found to create this unity was to bring in the mastering of the album by Obie Bryan, who mastered it and was able to create this combination, taking all the producers and putting them together where you can hear the connection between one and the other.”

“Big Bet”

Reading the reports already published about the singer, more than once she has been called a “big bet” in current music. A B bandRuby said that this ends up being an added responsibility, yes, but that she tries to take it as fuel.

“I am a very dedicated person and this dedication to my work is what will make the difference throughout the process. It is the pressure not only of the people who work with me, but also of family and friends. Everyone has very high expectations to see things that happen. But I think maybe because they already know me and understand that I can offer, they feel the desire for other people to connect with this truth. So I try to use that expectation as fuel to go further, and it’s always a door. All music is a door, because we don’t know how the public will react, and Brazil is very big, so we have to explore and be present […]. I think this album has a great chance of being the one that will introduce me to Brazil and make people know me.”

Believe and fight… always!

Like the facets of a precious stone, Ruby shows in this album her truth, all her musical plurality and also her social vision, demonstrating through her art the power of black women. This, in fact, is the message of the album.

“To get everything we want, life will always require an attitude from us. And then we just have to decide whether it will be a passive or progressive attitude, where we are always trying to reach a different place. I would really like it if people connect with these songs in a way that somehow improves their day. The main factor that drives me to make music is to see in others this energy that music is capable of giving us. I always want to be a bridge for people to be better in a certain sense.”
