Beatles: Shakespeare inspired ‘Let It Be,’ reveals Paul McCartney

Paul McCartney revealed unusual inspirations for the Beatles’ hit “Let It Be.” According to the bassist of the band from Liverpool, England, pieces by his fellow countryman William Shakespeare helped create the song’s verses.

As explained in the book The Lyrics: 1956 to the Present (2021) (via CheatSheet), McCartney he studied Hamlet (1603) in high school, and some dialogues followed him into adulthood.

“I remembered this recently. While studying literature in high school with my favorite teacher, Alan DurbandI read Hamlet. Back then, I needed to memorize lines to quote in exams,” she explained.

Paul mentioned an example with the name of the track itself: “‘O, I could tell you — But let it be. Horatio, I am dead.‘ I suspect that these verses were implanted in my memory unconsciously.”

Bass player’s dream with his deceased mother, Mary McCartney, also influenced composition. “In the dream, I saw my beautiful mother, with a kind face in a place of peace. It was very comforting. She saw how worried I was about what was happening in my life and about the future, and she told me: ‘Everything is going to be okay. Let it be.”
