Aimed at children, the film “Thelma, the Unicorn” is based on a series of successful children’s books
Netflix has released the poster and official trailer for “Thelma the Unicorn”, an animated children’s musical directed by Jared Hess, the acclaimed director behind the hits “Napoleon Dynamite” and “Nacho Libre”, in collaboration with Lynn Wang, well-known for the series “”Unikitty!” from Cartoon Network. The production is based on the children’s picture books by author and illustrator Aaron Blabey, who recently turned another book into an animation, “The Bad Guys.”
The title character is a humble brown pony with ambitious dreams of becoming a sensational music star. Thelma sees her aspirations come true when she undergoes an accidental transformation into a bright, sparkly pink unicorn. When everyone starts to believe that she’s a real unicorn—and not a pink-painted pony with a carrot horn—all the doors open to her musical stardom. The film explores themes such as the quest for fame, identity crisis, the ups and downs of stardom and the allure of becoming someone you’re not.
The original voice cast includes Brittany Howard, of the blues/soul rock band “Alabama Shakes”, who lends her voice to Thelma, alongside actors such as Will Forte (“The Last Guy on Earth”), Jon Heder (“Napoleon Dynamite” ), Jemaine Clement (“MIB: Men in Black 3”), Edi Patterson (“Vice Principals”), Sherry Cola (“Better Call Saul”), Hector Jimenez (“Gentefied”), Fred Armisen (“Portlandia”) and Zach Galifianakis (“The Hangover!”).
The premiere is scheduled for May 17th.
