Taylor Swift releases new album “The Tortured Poets Department”

The singer’s eleventh studio album includes new collaborations with Post Malone and Florence + the Machine

This Friday (19/4) Taylor Swift released her eleventh studio album, “The Tortured Poets Department”, announced in February this year during the Grammy Awards ceremony, during the acceptance speech for the award for best vocals pop (for “Midnights”). The new release debuted on digital platforms with two versions, one of which features 15 additional tracks (practically an entire extra disc).

He explained the album’s vibe with a text posted on his Instagram, in the best “tortured poet” style.

“An anthology of new works that reflect events, opinions and feelings of a fleeting and fatalistic moment, sensational and sad at the same time. This period of the author’s life is over, the chapter has been closed and barred. No There’s nothing to avenge, no scores to settle once the wounds are healed,” Taylor wrote upon release.

“And upon further reflection, a good number of them [feridas] Ultimately it was self-inflicted. The writer firmly believes that our tears become sacred in the form of ink on a page. Once our saddest story is told, we can be free from it,” he added, before concluding: “And all that remains is tortured poetry.”

Disc details

The new album mixes elements of pop rock, synthpop and indie, as well as the traditional country feeling present in previous works. The project was released on Apple Music in five playlists that give new meaning to the five stages of love pain created by psychiatrist Kübler-Ross: denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance.

The solo songs were written and produced by Taylor Swift and two partners, Jack Antonoff (“Reputation”) and Aaron Dessner (“Folklore”). The two versions of the album also include two important collaborations: with Florence + the Machine, for the song “Florida!!!”, and with Post Malone, for the single “Fortnight”, which will receive a music video this Friday (4/ 19) at 9pm.

Since the announcement, the title of the project has attracted the curiosity of “Swifties” who have begun to theorize that the songs refer to the artist’s ex-boyfriend, actor Joe Alwyn, with whom Taylor had a serious relationship for six years. It is worth mentioning that the extinct relationship served as inspiration for previous projects, such as “Folklore” and “Evermore”.

The situation took shape on social media after fans dug up a statement from Alwyn in an interview with Variety’s “Actors on Actors” section in mid-2022. There, he appeared alongside Paul Mescal and revealed that they were part of a group created by Andrew Scott entitled “Tortured Man Club”.
