Ozzy Osbourne reveals the best guitarist he ever played with

“For whatever reason, he’s f*cking good,” Ozzy said of the musician on his podcast

Ozzy Osbourne revealed the best guitarist he’s ever played with. And the answer may seem like marmalade to some: Tony Iommifounder and his colleague at black Sabbathwas chosen by the prince of darkness as his favorite, among those who have played with him.

The answer was given on the podcast The Madhouse Chronicles (via Loudwire), to friend and co-host Billy Morrisonwhom Ozzy declared Iommi to be “the best guitarist I’ve ever played with”.

“I played ‘Paranoid’, I played ‘Children of the Grave’ and ‘War Pigs’. [Outros guitarristas] they play the notes, but it’s not the same thing. I think a lot of the guys from the States play too fast. Tony Iommi, for whatever reason, he’s f*cking good,” said Ozzy.

Iommi, who ranked 13th on the magazine’s revised list of the 250 best guitarists of all time Rolling Stonewas also praised by Morrison, who commented that he would have the mark of “a true iconic artist”, which would be to imprint a way in which others can play the same notes, but never replicate it.

Tony Iommy

One of the mainstays of heavy metal guitar playing, Black Sabbath co-founder Tony Iommi developed his deliciously dark style as a result of an industrial accident that severed the tips of the middle and ring fingers of his left hand. Although he was able to play again with the help of plastic finger tips, homemade prosthetics forced him to use lighter strings and press harder on the neck of the instrument for his chords and solos. Combined with massive Laney amplifiers distorted with the help of a booster Dallas Rangemaster Specially modified, this style of playing by necessity created something unusually dark and menacing—and by tuning his guitars several shades lower to facilitate easier bends, Iommi created the earth-shattering template for countless metal guitarists to come after.

“Back then, you had to create your sound,” Iommi told Guitar World in 2020. “You couldn’t buy a device that made the sound you wanted, you had to put in the effort and build a tone yourself. And I thought that was great, really, because you believe in him more when you built everything yourself.”
