Victor Garber returns to JJ Abrams who cut his Klingon role on Star Trek in 2009

JJ Abrams’ star Trek the films had challenging castings and as a result some scenes with appearances of acting icons were left on the editing room floor. Legendary actor Victor Garber is one of those unfortunate ones, like the previous one Alias cast member he was asked to appear in the film as a Klingon. Now, years later, the beloved star has shared her thoughts on stepping down from her role.

I had the pleasure of talking to Victor Garber about it L’Orville: new horizonsand after seeing his character, Admiral Halsey, confront Krill’s species, I was reminded of his deleted scene as a Klingon interrogator in 2009. star Trek. I asked Garber if he was disappointed that his him ex Alias the boss, JJ Abrams, cut the scene, mostly because he had to wear all the prosthetics needed to play a Klingon. In response, the actor was sincere:

It didn’t destroy my relationship with JJ. [Abrams]but close enough [laughs]. No, it was something where he said “I have a funny idea” and every time a director tells you, [you go]”Funny for who exactly”, then I had to learn Klingon.

The scene, which can be found in the DVD and Blu-ray editions of star Trek movie, saw the movie’s Romulan villain, Nero, on a Klingon prison planet. The scene finally explained what happened after the madman destroyed the USS Kelvin and explained why so much time passed between his attack and his return. (Those who feel lost can review the film’s time travel plot .) Viewers also see Victor Garber’s Klingon using a Centaurian bullet, which Nero then uses on Captain Pike.

But in the end, the scene was cut for the time, and star Trek 2009 passed without Victor Garber and the other Klingons. Garber talked more about the role and revealed what he “will never do” after this experience:

I was disappointed because it would have been fun to be a part of it, and it was hard work. And learning Klingon was something I would never do again. It wasn’t funny, it was an act of love because I would do whatever JJ asked me to do.

Hey, playing a Klingon isn’t for everyone, and Victor Garber wouldn’t be the first actor not to appreciate the experience. (Even Michael Dorn wasn’t a fan of the transformation.) However, it’s sad that the world lost the performance, and it’s crazy to think how much the film could have changed without the Klingon scene.

In 2009, JJ Abrams spoke with Gizmodo on the scene and explained why he had to cut it from the film. Abrams, sounding quite apologetic, shared some of the other struggles Victor Garber endured during his scenes:

It’s one of those things I hated to cut for various reasons. One of them was that I loved design, loved the world, loved history; it was really cool at the time and I can’t wait for people to see that scene. But Victor Garber, who is one of my favorite actors, also played a Klingon in the film. [He] she had a lot of makeup, a very heavy and sexy costume [that] let’s ride with it. And I had to call her and tell her that her scene wasn’t in the movie and a big consolation for me was that she will live on DVD and Blu-Ray forever.

Those with Paramount + subscriptions will not be able to watch the scene if they are streaming star Trek on the Service, although anyone with a physical copy (or YouTube access) can do so. If you are someone who loves the movie and wants some more context behind Nero’s motivations, you will definitely want to watch it. Plus, it gives you a chance to see the always charming Victor Garber.

It is the perfect time to be a fan of this franchise because there is a myriad of exciting things star Trek sign on the road. And they will all air for the rest of 2022 and beyond. There’s also a new movie on the way, and based on the latest update to the fourth movie in the series, there seems to be a very good chance that movie will hit theaters!
