With special appearances and controversial lyrics, “Houdini” sets the stage for the album “The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce)”
Eminem released this Friday (5/31) the single “Houdini”, the first from his upcoming album “The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce)”. The song’s clip references the iconic 2002 “Without Me” video, featuring several nostalgic references and special appearances – rappers Dr. Dre, 50 Cent, Snoop Dogg and comedians Shane Gillis and Pete Davidson (with hair platinum).
In the “Houdini” video, Eminem, now 51, receives a call from Dr. Dre while in bed, in clear reference to the beginning of “Without Me.” The song opens with the same iconic lyrics, “Guess who’s back, back/Shady’s back, tell a friend” and includes comic book-style imagery, with Eminem wearing the same superhero costume.
In the call, Dre reveals that a portal to 2002 has opened in the city, bringing a younger version of the rapper, with the era’s signature platinum blonde hair. The two versions of Eminem appear together on screen, culminating in a fight that leads to the two merging, creating an older, blonder version of the rapper.
Provocative lyrics
The song is full of provocations that have generated mixed reactions. Excerpts such as “My transgender cat is Siamese / He identifies as black but acts like Chinese” and “In the coupe, I recline the seat / Listening to R. Kelly’s favorite band, the Black Guy Pees” caused controversy. Eminem also insulted his own children (who appear in the clip) and made double-meaning jokes involving Megan Thee Stallion, generating criticism for insensitivity.
However, while some critics condemned the song, fans defended Eminem, claiming that the press has no sense of humor.
The fact is that the clip made headlines, becoming the most viewed of the day on YouTube and leading the topics on X (formerly Twitter).
“Houdini” sets the stage for the release of “The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce),” which Eminem promises will be an epic farewell to his alter ego Slim Shady. The album is expected in the North American summer (our winter).
