REM surprised the audience present at the Songwriters Hall of Fame, the night of this Thursday the 13th, in New York. The band, who hadn’t performed live since 2008, took to the stage to sing Losing my Religion, including the presence of Bill Berrydrummer who left the band in 1997.
Breaking the hiatus marks a special moment, as REM was officially inducted into the Songwriters’ Hall of Fame during the ceremony. “Songwriting is the basis of why we get together,” singer Michael Stipe told AFP.
Interestingly, the members had denied, hours before the event, that they would play together again: “It would take a comet for that to happen,” joked bassist Mike Mills, in an interview with CBSMomortina. Guitarist Peter Buck added: “It would never have been this good.”
The band broke up after the album tour Collapse in the presentof 2011. Regarding the decision, Buck reveals that he has no regrets: “We could barely agree on where to go to dinner. And now we were able to agree. I think we stopped at the right time.” It was a great time, you know: great tour, great album, go home,” he said.
Since expectations for a new tour are almost zero, it remains to remember the visits that REM made to Brazil: in 2001, at Rock In Rio, and in 2008, during the album tour To acceleratewhich took place in Sao Paulo, Porto Alegre and Rio de Janeiro.
1. Playing at Rock In Rio What I lovehits from the album Document
The presentation, in front of more than 180 thousand people, was considered the largest in REM’s career
2. In Sao Paulo, in 2008, playing Everyone suffers (considered the “saddest song of all time” by OnePoll website)
During the show in Sao Paulo, which he followed Estadaosinger, Michael Stipe paid homage to the then newly elected President of the United States, Barack Obamaapplauded by the fans.
REM formed in 1980 and have released 15 studio albums in total.
