REM return to play live after 17 years

Without performing since 2007, the band reunited for a performance at the Songwriters Hall of Fame ceremony

REM surprised fans by performing live for the first time in 17 years during the 2024 Songwriters Hall of Fame induction ceremony. The band, consisting of singer Michael Stipe, guitarist Peter Buck, bassist Mike Mills and drummer Bill Berry, moved the audience present. the event, which took place on Thursday evening (13/6), playing an acoustic version of their hit “Losing My Religion”.

It’s worth mentioning that Bill Berry left the band in 1997, two years after suffering a brain aneurysm during a show in Switzerland. Therefore, it is the first time the entire lineup has reunited in 27 years. REM continued as a trio until their official dissolution in 2011, but the band’s last show was well before that, in 2007, at another Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony. They hadn’t played live in 17 years.

Emotional statements

During the ceremony, Michael Stipe reflected on the band’s journey: “Writing songs and having a catalog of work that we’re proud of, available for the world to see, is the most important part of what we’ve done as a band. Furthermore, we’ve managed to remain friends – and not just friends, but dear friends, friends for life.”

Stipe also expressed his gratitude for the honor: “What a journey this has been. It means so much to us that you recognized us tonight. And for that, we thank you for this incredible honor.”
