The documentary series explores the music rights dispute that led the singer to re-record her original albums
The Max platform announced the launch of the new documentary series “Taylor Swift vs Scooter Braun: Bad Blood”, which analyzes the conflict between singer Taylor Swift and music manager Scooter Braun, until then best known for discovering and managing Justin Bieber.
The dispute over records
The dispute began in June 2019, when Braun acquired the rights to Swift’s first six albums without her consent, purchasing the record label Big Machine, which was responsible for the releases.
The singer claimed that she was not consulted about the sale and that, in an attempt to buy back her recordings, she was prevented from doing so. Taylor expressed her frustration in a lengthy Tumblr post, saying she only found out about the sale when it was announced to the public.
Taylor’s reaction and Braun’s outcome
Shocked by the settlement, she began the process of re-recording her albums to regain control over her music. So far, Taylor has released re-recorded versions of “Fearless,” “Red,” “Speak Now” and “1989.” The new recordings, known as “Taylor’s Version”, not only allowed him to regain artistic control, but were also a huge commercial success, devaluing the original recordings acquired by Braun.
In 2021, Scooter Braun sold Swift’s album rights to Shamrock Capital for over $1 billion. Braun, in subsequent interviews, expressed regret over his handling of the acquisition, saying he underestimated the reaction of Swift and her fans. Recently, Braun announced his retirement from the music business, ending a turbulent chapter in his career.
The documentary
“Taylor Swift vs. Scooter Braun: Bad Blood” promises to explore this dispute in detail. Consisting of two episodes of 60 minutes each, the series presents the points of view of both sides, both Taylor Swift’s accusations that the sale of the rights was carried out without her consultation and without the possibility of repurchasing her songs, and Scooter Braun, who says she refused to negotiate, inciting a public dispute by rallying her fans against him.
The production will include testimony from legal experts, journalists and people close to Swift and Braun, offering an in-depth analysis of the conflict. Topics such as music ownership, gender dynamics in the industry and the impact of fan influence on popular music will be explored.
Release date of
The production will premiere on the Max platform this Friday (6/21).
