“Vem Galopar” goes viral, but Juliette’s song is forgettable

Inspired by a classic by Luiz Gonzaga and rejected by Anitta, the song is a poorly arranged musical salad that adds little to the singer’s search for a space in Brazilian music

The music of the moment is Come at a gallop, the most recent version of Juliette. If you haven’t heard it yet, don’t, even if, inevitably, you’ll come across it anyway. The track went viral, which means it achieved her goal. Only on YouTube. the audiovisual already has more than 420 thousand views. However, it still does not appear in Brazil’s top 50 on Spotify.

However, it is difficult to define what Juliette as a performer and the composers – who wrote the song Junior Gomes, Lucas Medeiros, Rafinha RSQ and Shylton Fernandes – intended as an “adaptation of Pagode Russo”, the classic by Luiz Gonzaga and João Silva. composed in 1946 which mixes baião and trepak, a Russian folk dance. A pastiche, perhaps.

Yes, it has the text (suffering) in the double meaning – the original, played with the word Cossack – and the basis of the Russian baião of Gonzagão. We start with a square dance and move on to the trap. It has a hint of tea-cha-cha. The lyrics say “Brazilian swing, you can put spice on it.” The chorus says “see how it sounds” over and over again.

Everything calculated and assigned in two minutes. Ideal time for the current parameters of digital platforms and social networks, in which the listener does not have the patience to listen to something very long or the songs must be used for dance apps.

Juliette mocked those who criticized the song. “Do you want poetry?”, she asked in a video posted on her social networks. Since she has become a favorite for the Big Brother Brazill, in 2021, still within the program, Juliette was put on a pedestal by her fans and the media. It was established that it was forbidden to criticize her.

Her legitimate dream, of course, was to become a singer. She hummed occasionally at home, without any technique or tuning. After leaving the program, a war operation was organized for her Juliette to become a singer. You received Gilberto Gil’s blessing. The product has been created.

Since then, Juliette has released singles and EPs. Always with one foot there and the other there. Initially, she flirted with MPB Fofa, which also includes names like Kell Smith, Anavitória, Tiago Iorc and Ana Vilela. After the initial excitement around her name and her first EP passed, Juliette looked for other places. She has recorded country pop, funk, trap and has collaborated with Marina Sena, Dilsinho and João Gomes, notable names in the music scene and festival circles. She, however, got in the way.

Juliette, as a singer, was confined to her bubble. It is precisely in this space that she is immune to criticism. Saint Johnhis new album, in which Come at a gallop came out, even though it’s an attempt to pay homage to her northeastern roots – Juliette is from Campina Grande, Paraíba – it’s a poorly arranged musical salad that adds nothing to her career. Worse still: it goes against a movement that claims that the June holidays must rediscover their essence, interpreting genres such as forró, baião, drag-pé and square dances in their pure state.

San Giovanni live – is it really live? listen carefully! – will just be another forgettable Juliette outing, in which she tries to fall in line Donna Frevo AND The girls’ Xote with POCPOC, a song featuring DJ Pedro Sampaio and Rafinha RSQ, the latter being Anitta’s producer. And he gives him a slap and a hand to the wall. At the end, the sweet and innocent “look at the sky, my love”.

Maybe this is the time for Juliette to stick her head out of the bubble they’ve created for her and, instead of making fun of her, understand why she gets so much criticism. Or do like Anitta, who wisely gave up recording Come at a gallop.
