Singer tries her best to follow a specific pattern that she herself admires as a fan of other artists
With more than 35 years of career, Mariah Carey has already released 15 studio albums. This represents a very large catalog of songs, most of which feature lyrics written by herself.
Thus, as expected, the American singer developed her own style of composition. And that involves knowing what to do and, especially, what not to do.
In an interview with the series Audible Worlds + Music (via Rolling Stone USA), Carey revealed that her biggest goal when writing song lyrics is to make them applicable to as many fans as possible. In other words: no specific compositions, as the idea is to generate identification.
“One thing I try to do is not be too specific, because I don’t want someone else to not be able to understand the lyrics I wrote. I want it to help them heal and for these lyrics to refer to any situation they are going through.”
This does not prevent Mariah from using her own personal references when composing the verses. However, the way of presenting the message is adapted so that it sounds more general.
“It can often be very personal for me, but I keep it basic. It can also be someone else’s way of releasing any emotional feelings or whatever they’re going through.”

“This song is mine”
This concept was developed by Mariah Carey for a simple reason: when she was younger, she also felt identified with certain songs. Like many other people, she listened to it and immediately thought “this song is mine” — even though she had no idea what the composer wanted to evoke.
“I would say, ‘That’s my song,’ just because in a small part, for me as a teenager, I would say, ‘That’s exactly what I’m going through.’ I have no idea what the person who wrote those lyrics meant by that, but for me, at the time, it was all about me.”
