R. Kelly sues arrest for suicide surveillance

Singer R. Kelly was removed from suicide surveillance after lawyers’ request

R. Kelly is no longer under suicidal surveillance. The singer was placed on condition last Saturday, June 2, after receiving a 30-year prison sentence for sexually abusing women, girls and boys, more than 20 years after facing the first charges.

According to lawyers from Kelly, there was no need for this kind of precaution, as he is not “suicidal.” The representatives filed a lawsuit against the Brooklyn Metropolitan Detention Center. Last Tuesday, 5, singer was removed from surveillance.

The lawyers allege that “it is a policy to punish high-profile inmates by placing them in harsh conditions of suicidal surveillance, even if they are not suicidal.” Among the complaints is the lack of utensils and healthy places to eat.

The suit seeks compensation for “emotional stress, humiliation, pain and suffering, and other damages in an amount defined by the judgment.” Kelly would have undergone another psychiatric evaluation, which released him from surveillance.

R. Kelly’s Crimes

In September 2021, a jury in New York City found the Grammy-winning songwriter guilty of sex trafficking and racketeering, on all nine counts against him. On June 29, 2022, the US District Judge Ann Donnelly imposed the sentence after hearing from survivors who attested to how the singer’s exploitation had repercussions on the lives of each victim.

At trial, victims described how R. Kelly subjected them to perverse and sadistic moments when they were minors. Several said how he would demand strict adherence to rules, such as needing permission to eat or go to the bathroom, as well as writing “apology letters” intended to absolve him of wrongdoing.
