DJ Faces ‘Revenge Porn’ Allegations From Ex-Girlfriend, Denies All Charges
DJ and electronic music producer Diplo is accused of sharing sexually explicit images and videos of a woman without her consent. The artist, who recorded several hits with Anitta, including “Sua Cara di lei”, with Pabllo Vittar, and recently opened Madonna’s latest show in Copacabana, is suspected of having committed the crime known as “revenge porn “.
Process details
The victim, who filed the anonymous lawsuit last Thursday (27/6) in the United States, claims to have had an intimate relationship with Diplo, whose full name is Thomas Wesley Pentz, over the course of seven years. During this time, he allegedly recorded videos of the two having sex and later distributed the images without her permission.
According to the lawsuit, the woman sometimes consented to Diplo filming them, but always made it clear that she did not want him to share the videos. In November 2023, she was contacted by a person claiming to have intimate images and videos of her with Diplo, which had been sent to her via Snapchat in 2018. The woman reported the distribution of these images to the police in Brooklyn, New York, where she lives.
Investigation and defense
The New York Police Department confirmed that detectives are investigating the complaint against Diplo, also known in Brazil for the Major Lazer project, with which, in addition to the song “Pra te Machucar”, he plays with Ludmilla.
Defending the musician, attorney Bryan Freedman told the New York Times that his client had previously been the target of false lawsuits. “Over and over, Wes [Diplo] was targeted by a group of untrustworthy individuals and their unscrupulous lawyers, who fabricated falsehoods in search of an unmerited reward. This trial appears to be much the same,” Freedman said.
The lawsuit, filed in federal court in California, cites a federal law that prohibits the release of intimate images without consent and a state law against revenge porn.
Previous legal dispute
Diplo is also embroiled in a legal dispute with another woman, Shelly Auguste, who accuses him of sexual assault and of posting an explicit image of her on social media. In court documents, Diplo has denied the allegations and called her a “fraud.” He has filed a lawsuit against Auguste, accusing her of stalking him and distributing explicit photos and videos of him, allegations she has denied. “I have been forced to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars fighting her false claims,” Diplo said, noting that an arbitrator ruled in his favor.
