At 82, the singer from Bahia plans to end his concert career with one last tour of Brazil, the United States and Europe.

Singer Gilberto Gil, one of the greatest idols of Brazilian popular music, has announced that he will say goodbye to the stage in 2025. The news was confirmed by his press office.

Before leaving the stage, Gilberto Gil will perform in a series of shows around the world. At 82 years old, the Bahian artist will embark on one last tour which will take place in Brazil, the United States and Europe, scheduled for next year.

Despite the end of live performances, he will continue to be involved in music, preserving the essence that made him one of the biggest names in MPB.

Career and legacy

Born in Bahia, Gilberto Gil began his career in the 1960s and soon became one of the main exponents of Tropicalismo and the new MPB. His national prominence began in 1965, when he participated in music festivals that highlighted his talent. He soon stood out for his ability to mix Brazilian rhythms with foreign influences, from rock, funk, reggae and Afro beat. This musical diversity has earned him important awards, including a Grammy and a Latin Grammy, consolidating his importance as a global reference.

Political and cultural activity

In addition to his musical career, Gilberto Gil has played a significant role in Brazilian cultural policy. He served as Minister of Culture during former President Lula’s first two terms, between 2003 and 2008, and in 2021 he took up the post of Chair 20 at the Brazilian Academy of Letters.
