Singer reimagines iconic score for new film in series, premiering Wednesday on Netflix

The rapper didn’t know the theme song
During an interview with actor Eddie Murphy, Lil Nas “Peter Griffin from ‘Family Guy’ sang the theme and I thought, ‘That’s a really good tune,’” said Lil Nas X. “Then I watched the movie years later.”
Eddie Murphy, returning to the role of Axel Foley, commented on the generation gap: “You weren’t even born in 1984… you weren’t even an idea in your father’s head.”
Lil Nas “I’m happy to do it,” the rapper said. “I hope I won’t be criticized by people who love the original.”
Murphy praised Lil Nas X’s work: “It’s exciting to have new music and to have this brother be a part of it.”
About the movie
The sequel is set 30 years after the third film. The first three films were released in 1984, 1987 and 1994 respectively and grossed a total of $735.5 million worldwide. They all showed Detroit police officer Alex Foley traveling to Los Angeles to solve interstate cases. This time, Foley returns to Bevery Hills with his daughter, to investigate a conspiracy that poses a threat to the young woman’s life.
In addition to Eddie Murphy, the sequel also features four actors from the original films: Judge Reinhold and John Ashton, who played Detectives Billy Rosewood and Sergeant Taggart, Foley’s bumbling assistants in Los Angeles; Paul Reiser, Foley’s original partner in Detroit named Jeffrey Friedman; and Bronson Pinchot, who played Serge, a brash art gallery clerk.
They are joined by new characters played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt (“The Chicago 7”) and Kevin Bacon (“Guardians of the Galaxy: Holiday Special”), who play police officers, and Taylour Paige (“Zola”) as of the protagonist’s daughter.
The sequel was written by Will Beall (“Aquaman”) and directed by Mark Molloy, who signs his first feature film after winning numerous awards for his work in advertising. The production continues to be carried out by Jerry Bruckheimer, responsible for the original trilogy.
“Beverly Cop 4: Axel Foley” premieres this Wednesday (7/3) on Netflix.
