Singer Mel B Takes Course to Help Victims of Domestic Violence

The former Spice Girls member said the studies were crucial to understanding her marriage

Singer Melanie Brown, also known simply as Mel B, completed a course in “trauma healing” on Monday (8/7), which complements her work as an advocate for women’s rights, especially victims of domestic violence. Now the former Spice Girls member will use her experience to work alongside an NGO that raises funds for the social cause.

“I’ve been studying trauma healing in college for the past few months, and after experiencing trauma up close, on all the levels I didn’t know about, I knew I wanted to study it and figure out how I could help in any way I could. My work with the NGO Women’s Aid is very important to me. It’s where I talk to thousands of survivors and women who are still dealing with violence,” said Mel B.

The artist stressed that the new studies were essential to understanding her marriage to producer Stephen Belafonte (“Vício Frenético”). At the time of their divorce, she told the BBC that she had suffered emotional, physical and financial abuse during their 10-year relationship, but the director denied the allegations.

Finally, Mel B said that her dedication to social work has been recognized and she celebrated winning the title of honorary doctor for her years of service to women’s rights. “No one believed me when I started this course and I got to the end, holding on to it. I am proud, so proud to want to help even more women, and then support survivors and end domestic violence,” she concluded.
