Initial Capital and Electric Abortion: after all, what is the relationship between the groups

Much is said about how Aborto Elétrico ‘gave rise’ to Capital Inicial, but the relationship between the bands goes beyond formation

The movement that gave birth to cultural life in Brasilia began when Renato Russo joined the guitarist André Pretorius and to the drummer Fe Lemos and founded the punk trio Electric abortion. Pretorius left the band right at the beginning and Renato went to the guitar, it was up to the drummer’s brother, Flavio, take over bass in the group, which soon became a small local sensation. When Renato left the band, the Lemos brothers called the guitarist Loro Jones and the vocalist Heloísa Helena to compose a new project, called Initial Capital. The singer did not last long, and the group chose for the role one of the first-time fans of Aborto Elétrico, as well as a personal friend of Renato Russo: Dinho Ouro Preto.

Initial Capital (1986)

Dinho felt free to ask the group to revive songs from the original trio that Renato no longer sang in his new band, the urban Legion – as well as asking Renato to finish one of his favorite songs. And it was precisely “Urban Music” that turned Capital Inicial into the second name to emerge in Brasília. In addition to this, the first album, named after the band, brought the post-punk ballad “Fátima” and the raw punk “Veraneio Vascaína” (which had been banned on the radio by the censorship that was still in force in the country).

All were part of Aborto Elétrico’s repertoire, but songs like “Psicopata”, “Tudo Mal”, “Leve Desespero” and “Linhas Cruzadas” showed that the group had the potential to go beyond Renato’s tracks, although the influence of the leader of the Legião Urbana continued to haunt the group’s career – to this day.
